Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic remake still in development as KOTOR II plans also emerge

Newly uncovered records show the Old Republic saga isn’t as dormant as fans once feared.

New details have surfaced around the future of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, following fresh reports of Saber Interactive’s long-running remake efforts, and unexpected references to a potential Knights of the Old Republic 2 reimagining.

Both updates surfaced through coverage from IGN and Game File, each pointing to internal documents and deposition statements tied to the long-discussed Switch version of KOTOR II’s Restored Content DLC.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 remakes seemingly in the works

According to IGN’s report, the most direct update stems from a deposition involving Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly. When asked to identify a mysterious project labelled “Juliet”, Reilly described it with little ambiguity.

“Juliet was the code name for a project where we were going to do a full remake of KOTOR II with modern art, modern gameplay […] keep the story and the characters and […] the general content of KOTOR II, but remake it for modern hardware and modern machines with updated graphics and all those kind of things,” he said. “It was something we were discussing with Aspyr.”

He added that the ambition extended to the famously cut material restored by community modders. “The plan was we would remake the content that was in the RCM as it relates to Star Wars in that Juliet project.”

Reilly’s final dated reference placed project Juliet as “technically on the roadmap” in March 2025. No further status update was established in the documents, leaving its active development ambiguous, but importantly, the report does not state that Juliet was cancelled.

What is clear is the current focus. Reilly stated, “We’re starting with the remake of KOTOR 1,” clarifying that “Aspyr isn’t working on those games.” Saber’s KOTOR 1 reimagining is now reportedly in development at Mad Head Games, the team behind Hellraiser: Revival.

Game File’s report adds extensive context from the years-long attempt to bring the Restored Content DLC to Nintendo Switch. While much of the filing material covers emails, production planning, and the timeline of the DLC’s cancellation on Switch, it also includes references to the same “Juliet” project, described in internal records as a full modern remake of KOTOR II developed in parallel with the previously reported KOTOR 1 remake.

Saber Interactive first announced its reimagining of Knights of the Old Republic back in 2021, but updates since then have been few and far between. The latest information confirms that development hasn’t stalled, with Saber telling fans in March that “everything that we have talked about is still in development.”

The newly surfaced documents also shed light on the wider picture. They outline the long chain of discussions behind the cancelled KOTOR II Restored Content DLC for Switch and, more importantly for players, reveal how both KOTOR projects have been handled internally.

Within those records is confirmation that Saber’s remake of the original Knights of the Old Republic is still moving forward under Mad Head Games. They also reference “Project Juliet”, a plan for a full KOTOR II remake with updated art, modernised gameplay, and restored content, which was still listed on internal roadmaps as recently as last year.

With these details out in the open, the situation is much easier to understand. The KOTOR 1 remake is still in development, and a full KOTOR II rebuild, including updated gameplay and restored content, was part of Saber’s plans as recently as last year. The next steps now rest with Saber and its partner studios, but both projects are in a more defined place than they were before these records came to light.
