The Super Mario Galaxy movie casts Donald Glover as Yoshi

Yoshi! Yoshi!

Nintendo has pulled back the curtain on its next big cinematic power-up. During a recent Nintendo Direct livestream, fans got a fresh look at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the animated sequel following the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Alongside a new trailer, the broadcast confirmed several new voice actors joining the already stacked cast, most notably Donald Glover, who will bring the beloved dinosaur Yoshi to life.

The new additions continue the film’s tradition of loading up on star power. Luis Guzmán will voice the villainous Wart, while Issa Rae joins as the imposing Honey Queen. The announcement came from Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination and producer of the film, who confirmed the new casting during the presentation.

Several familiar voices are also returning for the sequel. Chris Pratt reprises his role as Mario, joined once again by Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

The sequel also introduces new faces to the Mushroom Kingdom’s cosmic adventure. Benny Safdie will voice Bowser Jr., while Brie Larson takes on the role of Princess Rosalina, the fan-favourite character who first appeared in the 2007 game Super Mario Galaxy.

Story-wise, the sequel picks up after Mario and friends defeated Bowser in the first film. This time, the Mushroom Kingdom heroes are pulled into an interplanetary adventure that sends them far beyond familiar pipes and castles.

The newly released trailer teases a variety of space-themed locations inspired by the games. Mario, Luigi and Peach travel across wildly different planets, including a blazing volcanic world, a deep underwater environment, and a futuristic neon-lit zone packed with gravity-bending platforming hazards. Along the way, they team up with Rosalina and Yoshi while clashing with Bowser and his son.

Fans also spotted appearances from classic characters like Birdo, alongside enemies such as Wart and the Honey Queen, hinting at a broader slice of Mario lore making its way to the big screen.

The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and will release in cinemas on 1 April, with Universal Pictures, Illumination and Nintendo once again teaming up to bring the plumber’s next adventure to theatres.
