A new Sonic film is speeding into cinemas in 2028 as Paramount expands the blue blur’s growing movie universe.
Gamers will have another reason to mark their calendars, as Paramount prepares to expand one of the most commercially successful video game franchises on the big screen. A new Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off film is officially in the works and scheduled to arrive in Winter 2028, adding yet another chapter to the long running Sonic universe that has surged in popularity across cinema and streaming.
Paramount builds on Sonic’s box office success
According to Deadline, the upcoming project will be produced by Moritz’s Original Film and SEGA Sammy Group. It follows the continuing momentum of the franchise after the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which opened at number one during the pre Christmas window with a domestic debut of 60.1 million dollars. The film went on to earn 236.1 million dollars in the United States and 492.1 million dollars worldwide. In total, Paramount’s Sonic trilogy has generated 1.2 billion dollars globally.
Beyond the mainline films, the series has already branched out into streaming with the Knuckles spin-off on Paramount Plus. The show, led by Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, accumulated more than 11 million global viewing hours in its first 28 days. Deadline reports that it ranked as the platform’s number one kids and family series in terms of hours watched.
The new untitled film reflects Paramount’s goal of expanding the Sonic “universe.” While details on the plot and cast remain unannounced, the studio has confirmed a release date of 22 December, 2028. The project adds to Sonic’s growing presence in multimedia, with decades of games, animated series, comics, and past adaptations offering a wide pool of characters and storylines to draw from.
Sonic, voiced in the films by Ben Schwartz, has been a fixture in gaming since 1991. The franchise follows the hyper fast blue hero as he races through varied environments in pursuit of Doctor Eggman, portrayed by Jim Carrey. Over time, the universe has introduced numerous allies and rivals who could potentially feature in the new film.
With dozens of games and years of storylines to pull from, more details are expected to surface as development continues.
