Kojima Productions drops eerie teaser for new horror game OD, published by Xbox

OD is Kojima Productions’ next big project.

This week’s Kojima Productions 10th anniversary livestream dropped a reveal for Hideo Kojima’s next big project: a horror title called OD. The upcoming horror game was first announced with a brief teaser back in 2023, but we now have a clearer look at its gameplay and eerie atmosphere.

Here’s the trailer, entitled “Knock”:

Kojima Productions debuts new look at upcoming horror game OD

This week, game developer Kojima Productions held a 10th anniversary event called “Beyond the Strand” to dive into its next big projects, following the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Its first big reveal was a new trailer for OD, a horror game being published by Xbox Game Studios, and in development with movie director Jordan Peele.

Hideo Kojima is helming the project, making this his third game at Kojima Productions. In typical Kojima fashion, however, the trailer is as atmospheric as it is mystifying. The trailer begins with a brief passage of lore text, albeit redacted in parts: “Ten years since the [redacted] horror [redacted], [redacted]. The cursed [redacted] have once again [redacted] into the forbidden.”

More censored lore text hints that the building explored in this trailer was 3D scanned from a mysterious source. The rest of the trailer features an enigmatic red door, which Kojima himself seemed tight-lipped about, and a room wherein an unnamed character played by Sophia Lillis lights a number of candles.

The game is played in a first-person perspective, with Lillis’ character seemingly performing a supernatural ritual to keep strange monsters at bay in this teaser. Her efforts fail, however, as the candles morph in shape and a creature grabs her from behind. The trailer places an emphasis on the protagonist’s realistic facial animation, powered by the Unreal Engine’s Metahuman Creator.

“No one has ever done this before,” Hideo Kojima boldly stated during the game’s reveal, with Xbox Game Studios head Phil Spencer in attendance at the event. He also stated that Spencer would get mad if he revealed more details for the game, so fans will have to wait for more announcements in the future.

OD does not have a release date yet.
