Steam has set another new concurrent player record, as the digital store platform exceeded 28 million users on January 9th.
Valve's digital distribution platform Steam has broken another new record for concurrent users over the weekend. According to official reports, there were over 28 million or exactly 28,230,661 concurrent active players recorded on January 9th, 2022.
For comparisons, that is more than the total population of Romania (19.5m), or the Netherlands (17m). That is insane!
What is more impressive is that Steam just surpassed its previous all-time high last weekend at 27,942,036. And with this new record, it is hard to say if the trend will continue north.
Though analyst Daniel Ahmad believes that the best days for Steam have yet to come. He observed Steam saw "strong growth" with active users in 2020 because of the pandemic. The growth has been consistent since his notion, so it wouldn't be surprising for Steam to crack 28 million concurrent users according to his prediction.
Now, as for which titles constitute the record by player count, we see that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive remains the King of Steam with 881,051 players, followed by Dota 2 with 748,270, and PUBG at 351,786. The rest of the top charters included Apex Legends (237,441), Grand Theft Auto V (152,326), Rust (155,229), and surprisingly the declining MMORPG, New World (108,032) at number 7 on the list.
Despite numerous reports suggesting that Steam is losing its popularity and appeal, the numbers prove otherwise. It is however true that some publishers are getting the short end of the stick with the platform's stringent business model set by Valve, which caused some of the bigger names like Ubisoft to refrain from releasing titles on the platform.
