Big upsets and a beautiful Pinoy DotA 2 story in the making are the highlights of the last group stage day in Frankfurt. Seeds have been decided and the upper/lower bracket games of the first-ever DotA 2 Major can begin.
For the second day of group stage the teams seeded in group C and D fought for the much desired upper bracket slots. First two teams from each group will start the main event on 17th of November while the bottom two teams will have to play the survival best-of-one lower bracket in the first day of the main event at Festhalle Messe, Frankfurt, Germany.
GROUP C
As expected, Team Secret had no problem finishing on the top place of their group. Having to play their debut series versus the third place finishers at the Chinese qualifiers, Newbee.Young, who made it to the Fall Major after Invictus Gaming’s withdrew from the competition, Team Secret were slightly surprised by the Chinese youngsters in the second game of the series, where NB.Y drafted Huskar and even managed to outmaneuver and outplay the main favorites at this first DotA 2 major.
With a 2-1 victory versus Newbee.Young and a 2-0 versus LGD, Secret is the first team to grab the upper bracket seed. Although NB.Y haven’t won any of their series, which puts them at the bottom of the group, they had an overall good performance, showing signs of true potential for an upset in the lower bracket main event where they will face EHOME.
Second place of the group C was disputed between LGD Gaming and Cloud 9 who had to play each other twice during the day and in both match ups LGD came on top, claiming the upper bracket seed.
Although they qualified for the Nanyang Championships, Cloud 9 had to pull out from the tournament due to 1437’s passport issues which means that this Frankfurt Major is their second LAN event as a team.
GROUP D
Alliance found themselves surrounded by Asian teams in the group D and they crumbed under the Chinese and Pinoy Dota aggression. Getting stomped by both EHOME and Mineski they finished the group stage on the fourth position. Their last chance at the Frankfurt Major will be played in the opening game of the Main Event on Festhalle Messe scene where they will face the US representative, Cloud 9.
Despite the fact they were regarded as one of the favorites of Group D, EHOME had to play the decider seeding game versus Mineski who provided the biggest upset of the entire two days-group stage. Taking a surprising 2-0 victory versus the Chinese squad, Mineski is the only team coming to Frankfurt via qualifiers to claim an upper bracket main event spot.
In their two days rest time Mineski will have plenty of time to celebrate their captain Ryan Jay 'Bimbo' Qui whose Birthday happens to be today.
