Day 3 recap: CDEC dominates LGD, Secret escapes elimination

Day three of The International 5 gave way to quite a few close games and also a stunning performance from CDEC, unexpectedly smashing LGD 2-0.

At the end of day three, there are only eight teams remaining. CDEC and EG are in the winner bracket finals whilst in the loser's bracket there are three Chinese teams, one SEA, one CIS and one European team remaining.

Kicking off the day was a match between CompLexity Gaming and Virtus.Pro, this best-of-three series had viewers on the edge of their seats after CompLexity threatened to eliminate VP after winning the first game. The first game of this best-of-three series was very back and forth. At 18 minutes into the game, VP had a 12,000 net worth advantage, but at the 24th minute, the advantage was reduced to sub-1000 and six minutes later, the advantage was back up to 11,000; it was at the 50 minute mark that CompLexity broke the cycle and won the game. Despite this loss, Virtus.Pro rebounded and took the series, winning game two with a 15/6/11 Lina and 5/0/18 Dark Seer and winning game three in 43 minutes with solid play.

The next game of the day featured the favorites to take TI5, Team Secret, against the TI2 champions, iG. iG drew first blood in the series, having taken a close first game on the back of Xu 'BurNIng' Zhi Lei's legendary Anti-Mage - it was a game where iG had to come back from a 18,000 net worth deficit. Although iG drew first blood, the following two games were won by Secret in a convincing fashion having stomped in both games; they defeated iG in 26 minutes in the second game and denied iG any chance of amassing a net worth advantage in game three, forcing them to give up after Team Secret hit critical mass at around the 40 minute mark.

The above two best-of-threes are the day's lower bracket games; the first winner bracket series was LGD vs CDEC. The first game of the series was a game that either team could loss won due to one mistake, both teams were trying and failing to create a lead for themselves. However, at the 26 minute mark, LGD made a series of mistakes and gave away multiple kills, allowing CDEC to secure a lead and take the game. In the next game, LGD was not able to redeem themselves after losing game one as CDEC crushed them, ending the game 5-28 in 32 minutes and relegating LGD to the lower brackets.

The last series of the day was EHOME vs EG, a match-up the community felt was in EG's favor, with a betting odds of 70%-30%. But the viewers were in for a shock after EHOME easily took the first game off EG, ending the game in 32 minutes with a kill score of 19-3. However, much to the relief of the people betting on EG, EG managed to bring it back, crushing EHOME in games two and three.
