Nigma Galaxy upset Team Falcons to reach The International 2026 upper bracket semifinals

A stunning victory over defending champions Team Falcons sends Nigma Galaxy into the Top 6 of The International 2026.

The opening day of The International (TI) 2026’s Main Stage ended with fan favourites Nigma Galaxy sending defending champions Team Falcons tumbling into the lower bracket of the Playoffs after pulling off a stunning 2-1 reverse sweep.

The result guarantees Nigma Galaxy at least a Top 6 finish and an estimated US$159,864 in prize money–a result the team also achieved at the last TI. They now have a chance to surpass that milestone, advancing to the second round of the upper bracket, where they will face Team Yandex for a spot in the upper bracket finals.

Meanwhile, Team Falcons’ title defence has been thrown into serious jeopardy as they must continue their TI campaign through the lower bracket, where they are set to clash with Team Liquid for their tournament lives. Both series will take place tomorrow, 21 August.

The upset further boosts Nigma Galaxy’s credibility, extending their five-series winning streak that began in the Group Stage. The team are now on the path to a potential miraculous run, and if they make it all the way, Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan and Maroun “GH” Merhej would claim their second TI titles, while it would be the first for the rest of the roster. It would also make Kuro “KuroKy” Salehi Takhasomi the second person after Kurtis “Aui_2000” Ling to win TI as both a player and a coach.

Team Falcons and Nigma Galaxy’s paths to the TI 2026 Playoffs

Team Falcons entered TI 2026 as the defending champions, having outlasted Xtreme Gaming in a close 3-2 series in last year’s Finals. Since then, however, the team have faltered from their previous dominance, earning relatively disappointing results during the early stages of the 2025-2026 competitive season.

In April, the team finally found their rhythm with a 3rd place finish at PGL Wallachia Season 8, followed by a 4th place result at DreamLeague Season 29 the next month. They have not produced any stronger runs since then, but their recent performances have been promising enough to establish them among the favourites heading into this edition of TI.

Despite a rocky Group Stage to open their TI 2026 campaign, Team Falcons showed their potential by pushing heavy favourites TEAM VISION to the limit, nearly securing a victory in a three-game contest.  Falcons also suffered a series loss against Iron Wing, and claimed three series wins against LGD Gaming, GamerLegion, and BoomBoys–all of which went the distance. The 3-2 score placed Falcons in the top-half of the group rankings, pushing them into the Elimination round which they won soundly against Vici Gaming, 2-0.

Nigma Galaxy, on the other hand, had a very different story prior to the world championship this year. After a dry and barren 2025-2026 competitive season, the team underwent a significant roster change ahead of TI. The team brought back SumaiL–three months after he was benched from the team–and placed him in the carry role, while Artem “Lorenof” Melnick was brought in to fill the midlane position. These unconventional changes, particularly the decision to move SumaiL away from the midlane where he has traditionally excelled, seemed questionable at first.

However, the changes have proven to work, with the team qualifying for TI through the European qualifier before securing a Top 8 finish at the Dota 2 Esports World Cup 2026 last month. With these consecutive promising runs, Nigma Galaxy’s stock rose further, though many still considered them one of the dark horses heading into the world championship.

The team have continued to impress at TI 2026, especially after unexpectedly finishing on the Group Stage podium. They started with a rough 0-2 loss against Iron Wing, but subsequently mounted a four-series winning streak with victories over OG, LGD Gaming, Vici Gaming and Team Spirit. This placed them firmly among the Top 3 teams in the Group Stage and secured a direct Playoff berth.

Both teams collided in the first round of the TI 2026 Playoffs. Though Nigma Galaxy entered the head-to-head matchup as the underdogs, they defied the odds to reverse-sweep the defending champions, continuing their miraculous run at this year’s championship tournament through the upper bracket.

What is The International 2026?

TI 2026 will be this year's iteration of Dota 2's annual world championship tournament, taking place in August in Shanghai, China. As with previous iterations of the tournament, TI 2026 will feature a total of 16 teams that earn their spots in the tournament by receiving direct invites or earning slots through regional qualifiers.

The list of directly-invited teams to TI 2026 include Aurora Gaming, BoomBoys (aka BetBoom Team), Team Falcons, Team Liquid, Iron Wing (aka 1w Team), Xtreme Gaming, and Team Yandex. Meanwhile, the teams that earned their spots through the regional qualifiers include European qualifier winners Team Spirit, TEAM VISION (aka PARIVISION), HULIGANI, and Nigma Galaxy, North American qualifier winner GamerLegion, Southeast Asian qualifier winner OG, South American qualifier winner LGD Gaming, as well as Chinese qualifier winners Vici Gaming and Team Resilience.

TI 2026's main event will be hosted in the Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai. Valve first announced that Shanghai will host TI 2026 during last year's world championship tournament, where Team Falcons claimed the Aegis of Champions after defeating China's Xtreme Gaming in the five-game grand finals.

This will mark the second time that Shanghai will host TI after TI 2019, where Western Europe's OG became the first-ever two-time TI champions after defeating Team Liquid in four games to claim the grand prize of US$15.6 million, out of the US$34.3 million prize pool.

TI 2026 will be split into two phases: the ‘Road to The International’ and ‘The International’ main event. The Road to The International will be a Swiss-style Group Stage from 13 to 16 August, where the 16 teams will be cut down to the final eight that will play in the game's biggest stage from 20 to 23 August in Shanghai's Oriental Sports Center.

TI 2026's prize pool follows that of previous editions, with a US$1.6 million base prize pool that will then be boosted through sales of the TI 2026 Compendium.
