DreamHack Summer - Day 2 Recap

Day two of DreamHack Summer 2016 has concluded, with Godsent challenging Immortals and NiP butting heads with Astralis in tomorrow’s semifinals.?

Finland ENCE vs. Brazil Immortals 6:9, 8:7 (14:16); 5:10, 2:6 (7:16)
Winner: Brazil Immortals 2-0
Maps: de_Mirage, de_Cbble
MVP: Brazil Joao "felps" Vasconcellos

The first BO3 of the tournament saw ENCE face Immortals, both of whom lost their BO1 group matches, for a spot in the following qualification BO3 against SK Gaming. Immortals started Mirage on their T side, and following strong entries by Lucas "lucas" Teles, they were able go up 5-0 before ENCE could reply. The Brazilians reset the CT economy and went up 8-1 before ENCE finally got into the game and salvaged the half for a 9-6 score for Immortals.

Immortals again picked up the first 5 rounds of the half and left the Finns little hope with a 14-6 score line. However, ENCE managed to regroup and drive the score up to 14-15 before a series of mistakes allowed Ricardo "boltz" Prass to clutch a 1v3 after-plant on B site to seal the map for Immortals.

ENCE, following a demoralizing map point on Mirage, started strong on Cobblestone and picked up the first three rounds and built up a solid economy, with only one death total in those rounds. After a few back and forth rounds and two brilliant 1v2 clutches from Aleksi "allu" Jalli, the score was tied 5-5. Immortals then took control and won their T half 10-5.

Despite losing the second pistol, Immortals rebounded with a decisive force-buy win and then closed out the map with little trouble on CT, 16-7 to earn a chance to qualify for the semi-finals in a decider BO3 against SK Gaming.

Sweden Epsilon vs. Europe Hellraisers 11:4, 5:6 (16:10); 12:3, 4:10 (16:13)
Winner: Sweden Epsilon 2-0
Maps: de_Nuke, de_Mirage
MVP: Sweden Joakim "disco doplan" Gidetun

Epsilon took advantage of Hellraisers' disarray and lack of coordination on Nuke, putting up nine unanswered rounds to start out their CT side, including a 2v4 retake with a 4k by William "draken" Sundin. The CIS mix team was able to regroup and salvage four rounds in an otherwise miserable half that ended 11-4 for Epsilon.

The Swedes carried their momentum into their T half, winning the pistol and the ensuing anti-ecos. Hellraisers coordinated in a way that the Swedes did not have to compete with on CT and they put up a decent number of rounds before Epsilon closed the map out 16-10.

Hellraisers took early control of their T half on Mirage, before they were caught off-guard by an Epsilon second round force buy which significantly swung momentum and saw them win five rounds in a row before being shut down by a 1v2 clutch by Tomáš "oskar" Š?astný. There was potential for a comeback but Epsilon put their feet down and put up a huge CT half of 12-3.

Hellraisers showed their resilience throughout their CT half in the face of defeat - they won pistol to reduce the deficit to 6-12, and even when Epsilon got to fourteen rounds, they continued fighting. Epsilon finally managed to seal their spot in the decider BO3 against NiP with a score of 16-13.

Denmark SK Gaming vs. Brazil Immortals 9:6, 7:0 (16:6); 5:10, 4:6 (9:16); 3:12, 5:4 (8:16)
Winner: Brazil Immortals 2-1
Maps: de_Cbble, de_Overpass, de_Train
MVP: Brazil Lucas "lucas" Teles

Immortals exploded on their T half of Cobblestone going up 3-0, but the Danes, equipped with rifles, only conceded three more rounds on their CT half to convincingly end the half 9-6. Carrying their momentum from the first half, SK Gaming put up an outstanding seven rounds in a row to take an early lead in the series 16-6.

After getting destroyed on their own map pick, Immortals came out seeking vengeance and they put up ten rounds on their T half on Overpass, despite numerous 1v2 clutches by Valdemar "valde" Bjørn Vangså. Similar to the opening match of the series, the winning team of the first half carried their momentum into the second half, and Immortals took a huge 14-5 lead before SK could tighten up their defence and try to mount a comeback.

SK started gaining momentum, picking up four rounds in a row on CT, however a massive triple kill by "lucas" put the Brazilians on map point and they closed out the map 16-9 the following round.

The series came down to Train, a map which favoured SK, who beat Immortals on it the opening day of the tournament. After clearly doing their homework, Immortals put up a convincing 12-3 CT half which left little room for error for SK’s CT half. Immortals maintained their composure and closed out the series 16-8, earning a spot in the semi-finals against GODSENT.

Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas vs. Denmark Epsilon 8:7, 8:7 (16:13); 4:11, 12:3 (16:14)
Winner: Sweden NiP 2-0
Maps: de_Overpass, de_Cache
MVP: Sweden Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg

This series began with Epsilon’s map pick Overpass and two successive 4ks from Joakim "disco doplan" Gidetun on CT to give Epsilon an early 2-0 lead. NiP bought up AKs on the third round thanks to a first round bomb plant and prevented Epsilon’s economy from getting out of hand with a win on the third round. Epsilon was able to reset NiP immediately but NiP fought back, lead by multiple 3ks from Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund, to an 7-8 T half.

NiP began to take control of the first map, winning four unanswered rounds to start their CT half, going up 12-7 before a response from Epsilon. Epsilon created a tense situation for the CTs, decreasing the deficit to only 13-12 for the CTs. Composed play from veterans Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg and GeT_RiGhT lead NiP to eventually close the first map out 16-13.

The first half of NiP’s map pick, Cache, was a disaster. Epsilon won their CT pistol round and quickly began to pull away score-wise, getting up to 8-0 before two hero clutches from f0rest finally got NiP on the board. Epsilon kept calm and finished the half 11-4.

GeT_RiGhT secured the CT pistol for NiP, who put up five crucial rounds in a row before Epsilon found their footing. Epsilon only managed to get up to 13-10 before superior gamesense and experience helped NiP recovery to narrowly close out the series 16-14 and to earn a spot in the semi-finals against Astralis.
