After the Awesome Cup ended, we asked the winning team 99cents a few question regarding the competitive scene of Awesomenauts as well as about their tournament run.
Q: Congratulations winning the Alienware Awesome Cup, how was it playing the cup?
A: It was the most fun we had playing this game so far, and we were happy to face other high level teams that had a lot of experience.
Q: What motivated you the most, the glory of winning, the Alphas or the prize money?
A: The chance to play in front of a lot of people, as well as the prizes and fun.
Q: Did you prepare in any certain way for it?
A: We scrimmed a few teams in the main bracket while the tournament was happening, especially one day before the main bracket started.
Q: Did you have several hero combinations in mind or were you mostly focusing on a few Nauts?
A: We were mostly focusing around the characters we were confident with, such as Froggy G, Skølldir, Scoop, Penny and Coco.
Q: Did you study your opponents any before playing them, in the main bracket?
A: Since the teams are well known, we already knew what characters they were confident with and banned/counterpicked based on that knowledge, but mostly came to the point of banning top tier characters over players’ characters.
Q: Do you remember any particular match that was the most challenging? Qualifiers or playoffs.
A: Game one against team BOOM, this match was our only loss during the entire course of the tournament, we screwed up in the banning part of the game and gave BOOM the opportunity to use a comp we sometimes struggle against, which played a big role in the outcome of the game.
Q: Which map do you prefer and why?
A: Aiguillon, it’s the most balanced map out of the three that were legal in Awesome Cup, the gameplay there is a lot more fast paced than it is on Ribbit IV and Sorona, where the gameplay is more centered around having control over the middle.
Q: What do you think of Awesomenauts as a competitive game?
A: It needs to be balanced professionally and played on dedicated servers, but all in all it’d be a great game to have high level games in.
Q: How does it differ playing a tournament team match compared to playing a regular casual public game?
A: In competitive matches mistakes are punished a lot more than they are in public matches.
Q: Do you play and/or follow any other competitive Esports titles? If so, how do you feel Awesomenauts compare?
A: We follow Super Smash Brothers, the scene in Smash is a lot bigger than the scene Awesomenauts has at the moment, but in our opinion Awesomenauts is just as fun to play tournaments in.
Q: Could you see yourself being a professional Awesomenauts player if there was a scene for it?
A: We could if there was a scene for it sure, but at the moment we’re mostly looking at it as a hobby.
Q: Overall, why do you favour Awesomenauts over other games?
A: Mainly because of the nice and active community, but also because of the unique 2D approach of the MOBA genre.
Q: Would you enter another Alienware Awesome Cup? Would you encourage others to do so?
A: Yes, for other teams just go for it, there’s no reason not to.
Thanks answering the questions and congratulations once again. Any final words?
Shoutout to momma Whoophee for letting him stay up all night.
