Rogue take important first victory in APEX 3

The foreigners might just survive the group of death.

Although they played the easiest opponent first in Group A in Mighty AOD, Rogue are nonetheless off to a good start in the third season of Korea’s premier LAN circuit.

The Frenchmen arrived to the Mecca of esports as one of only two foreign rosters invited to APEX, alongside EnVyUs, champions from the league’s inaugural season. Rogue’s long reign over the western Overwatch scene had put them on a 34-game win-streak prior to their first, which would also be their first offline match since the team took fourth at IEM Gyeonggi.

After absolutely dominating the previous season of APEX, the South Korean teams remained the favorites to win season three as well—especially with the overwhelming numbers in their favor—but their first encounter with the West did not go in their favor. Fresh off of challenger league, Mighty AOD lost in four games to Rogue, unable to put a halt to their spree.

This isn’t to say a perfect Rogue was on display in that first match. The team showed moments of weakness on Temple of Anubis, which allowed Mighty AOD to get on the board, and although the series was sealed on Gibraltar with flying colors it begs the question whether or not Rogue will be able to withstand a much tougher opposition.

Of the that there will be aplenty, considering Rogue’s position in APEX’s group of death. Reigning champions Lunatic-Hai and freshly revamped KongDoo Panthera are Rogue’s next opponents in the round robin and the foreigners will want to win at least one of these series for a shot at the top eight.

In the other match yesterday, KongDoo Uncia proved they had really drawn the short stick from the KongDoo brand shuffle. The loss of star DPS Ji-Hyuk “birdring” Kim to KongDoo Panthera and long-time support Jun-Seo “lucid” Yoo to Afreeca Blue left Uncia with a roster with three untested players and two more that had switched roles. The team ultimately lost 1-3 to former challengers X6-Gaming and will need victories over RunAway and Afreeca Blue to keep their tournament life.

Next week will see Rogue’s second match in APEX being played as they play the new KongDoo Panthera on May 12.
