Europe had already crowned their champion, then it was North America’s time. Rogue took on Liquid in a best of five battle to see who’d become the champion.
The EU Overwatch Pit Championship has been going on for a few long weeks, wherein Rogue has looked incredibly strong all throughout the tournament. Another surprising top contender was Liquid, which fell to Selfless earlier in the playoffs, making them have to take the long way round to the finals. Yesterday Liquid and Selfless met again, but this time Liquid took their revenge and headed into the finale where all-French Rogue waited (in Las Vegas).
Grand Final; Rogue vs. Team Liquid - Rogue wins, 3-1
First map of the game would be King’s Row. In the very first round, Rogue with their defense dive comp, full held Liquid. Then they slowly and undramatically took first point themselves, going up 1-0 in the overall series. Next map was loser's choice as usual, where Liquid picked Illios. On this map we didn’t see the usual dive comp. (Thankfully.) We were blessed with a whole bunch of Pharmercy from both teams, and some nice Widow v. Widow battles as well. Eventually, after a set of close rounds, Liquid took their chosen map making the score 1-1.
On Dorado, Rogue’s pick, Liquid did not manage to make it all the way to the end. Rogue then made it look fairly easy, getting to Liquid’s mark with a few minutes left. It was clear Rogue was just better on the more traditional maps.
The final map as it would prove to be, was Lijang Tower, again a Control map chosen by TL. As most King of the Hill maps are, this was a very close ordeal. Liquid chose to play Pharmercy quite a lot. This didn’t work out very well at first, but Liquid managed to come back for a little bit (winning round 3). But in the end, Rogue proved to be one size too big for Liquid, fighting back strong and taking Lijang. With a close 1-3 loss, Liquid has shown promise for the future which is the more surprising conclusion of this tournament.
Rogue are now up to a 21 games long win streak. They will surely hope to continue this as they enter the Alienware Monthly Melee later tonight, right aKm?
