The playoffs for Beyond the Summit’s Overwatch Cup just wrapped up, with the final between Cloud9 and EnVyUs being no real surprise. The tournament featured two Cups, with the top two teams from each Cup making it to the playoffs. EnVyUs was joined by TSM from Cup #1, and Team Liquid joined Cloud9 from Cup #2. While the final matchup was no real shock, as EnVyUs and Cloud9 are ranked number one and two in the world, there was still some great action and a few important takeaways.

Final results (prize money):

  1. EnVyUs ($5,000)
  2. Cloud9 ($3,500)
  3. Team Liquid ($1,499)
  4. TSM

The first Cup took play on July 9th-10th with EnVyUs and TSM being joined by Method (playing as 1SHOT at the time), Northern Gaming Red, Team Liquid, NRG (playing as Luminosity Gaming at the time), Cloud9, and Splyce. Again, the winners bracket final was no real surprise as EnVyUs beat Cloud9 in three straight games. However, the losers bracket final had TSM coming out on top against Cloud9, 3-1. The second cup, taking place from July 23rd-24th, featured seven teams with eLevate, Sodipop, Selfless, Method, and Clutch joining Cloud9 and Team Liquid.

One of the big surprises of the tournament was the great play from Team Liquid, who ended up taking third place. Team Liquid started off the tournament with a 0-2 loss to Sodipop, but after that they didn’t drop a map until they played EnVyUs in the playoffs. During their impressive run they had wins against eLevate, Selfless, Sodipop and Method. After their loss to EnVyUs in the first round of the playoffs, Team Liquid was able to beat TSM 2-0, then falling to Cloud9 in the loser’s bracket finals.

The other story to take note of is EnVyUs and their amazing fifty-five game win streak. They are, without a doubt, the best team in the world right now by a substantial margin. Their last loss came against REUNITED way back in early June, during a GosuGamers EU Weekly. You would have to go twenty-one games further, to a match against Cloud9 in May, to find the last time that EnVyUs lost on the NA servers. It should also be pointed out that EnVyUs is not just winning their matches, they are doing so in dominant fashion, dropping only six maps total since their last loss.
