Take a look at what makes EnVyUs so dominant. We break down their original run, their slump and their resurgence as the best team in Overwatch.
Two Eras, two Metas, One dominant team. EnVyUs, formerly known as closed beta king IDDQD (the team, not the player...), is back on top once again. The only stain on this record of dominance is a six week period in which Cloud9 ruled the roost. Their resurgence as the 1st ranked overall team (by quite a distance) in the world leads us to question what makes them so good.
IDDQD
Our Overwatch overlords burst onto the scene in the first tournament of the second closed beta, GosuGamer’s EU Weekly #3. They made quick work of a punishing bracket, including a 2-0 trouncing of the first closed beta legends Melty eSport Club. The newcomers went on to defeat REUNITED in a hotly contested series, something that would go on to become the norm. IDDQDs matches in this era were won by brute force. Their firepower and their impressive abuse of the double orb comp (2 Zenyattas, 2 Genjis, Lucio and a flex) allowed them to go off on the most dominant run we had seen up to that time.
EnVyUs
The open beta brought several changes. Teams were catching up and IDDQD could no longer win by sheer skill alone. The Meta also shifted towards a Widowmaker centric playstyle which didn’t favor their strengths at the time. Reaver on Widowmaker was the most dominant a single player has been in Overwatch so far. The team finally decided it was time for a change and moved to EnVyUs and brought in Talespin. The injection of fresh skill paid off in June, when the team returned to its winning ways. Though they had already started their resurgence, the Widow and McCree nerfs helped a great deal. The changes freed them from having to run a dedicated sniper and allowed them to return to their chaotic, in your face playstyle that we saw in the closed beta.
Regardless of the era or Meta, EnVyUs is at their best when they can run amok and simply outskill other top teams. They are the first Overwatch Dynasty.
