Blizzard released a new update for Overwatch dubbed, Summer Games 2016. This surprise update brings new cosmetic items and a new game mode that will have you saying: Goal!
In this update, loot boxes have been upgraded to Summer Games lootboxes. They include all of the normal items you’ve been collecting, plus special Summer games themed items. Everything from new skins and emotes to player icons that show off your country pride. Every box is guaranteed at least one themed item and players get one free lootbox + player icon to commemorate the event. The special items cannot be purchased with credits and must be gotten from a lootbox. Once the event ends, players will not be able to receive the items anymore.
The new game mode will be the brawl for the rest of the event titled: Lucioball. A fast paced 3v3 soccer match on a special Estádio das Rãs map located in Rio de Janeiro. Think Rocket League more so than football.
Every player uses Lucio and you have 4 mins to score enough goals to win. His abilities have been modified to better suit the mode. His primary fire is now his melee, his alternate fire is still a sound blast and his Crossfade/Amp it up speed boost only effects himself. His ultimate, Sound Barrier, now pulls the ball towards himself from any part of the field allowing for great saves or a last ditch efforts for a goal. There are also special bounce pads on the field and near goals that give Lucio much larger jump height. The encased field also allows him to ride along the many walls and edges.
The event will run from August 2nd to August 22nd and Blizzard has teased that there will be more seasonal events coming in the future on their official site. Jeff Kaplan further explains this in the developer update below:
