Overwatch Beta returns February 9

After what felt like ages for many fans, Blizzard announced that the Closed Beta of Overwatch will be relaunched next week.

For the NA and EU region, February 9 will be the date to mark in the agenda. Asia will have to wait a short while longer, with Beta relaunching there on the 16th of February. The short blog post from Blizzard did not only confirm the return of the Beta, but also mentioned the changed that have been made since the last playable version of the game. Without going too much into detail yet, the posts mentions the following updates:

  • A renewed progression system
  • A new game mode, alongside two new maps
  • Several heroes have had balance updates
  • Private games have been updated, and now allow full A.I. matches

These major points were the leading subjects of most discussions, and it comes as no surprise that Blizzard has changed (and wants to highlight those changes) in the past months.

Apart from the in-game changes, the post also reminds all former players that they will be able to play the game again when Beta goes live. In addition to this the post urges aspiring heroes to sign up for Beta, as they're looking into recruiting more players to test the game. This might be a hint towards a new wave of invites coming soon, which would certainly not come as a surprise after such a long downtime.

With the return of the Closed Beta, the competitive scene can also look forward to tournaments being organized. Prior to Beta going down, several tournaments were held to test the waters for the future of Overwatch as an eSport. Amongst those were our own GosuGamers Weeklies and the ESL Atlantic Invitational, and it can be expected those will make a return shortly after February 9th.
