GosuGamers talked with Falcon Esports analyst Ar Sy about how the team have silenced their doubters in the M6 World Championship so far.
Burmese Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) powerhouse Falcon Esports have been one of the biggest surprises of the M6 World Championship so far, qualifying for the Knockout Stage with a 3-1 record in the Swiss Stage.
The teams Falcon Esports defeated to reach the Knockout Stage included some of the biggest favourites to win the tournament. They defeated Filipino superteam Aurora Gaming in their debut match, Malaysian juggernauts Selangor Red Giants in round three, and finally BloodThirstyKings to punch their tickets to the Knockout Stage.
GosuGamers sat down with Falcon Esports analyst Rodel “Ar Sy” Cruz ahead of the M6 World Championship Knockout Stage, who says the team have been more than happy to prove all their doubters wrong.
“We want more doubters. The more doubters we have, the bigger our self-confidence is.”
Silencing all doubts
Before the start of the M6 World Championship, Falcon Esports were one of the teams that barely qualified for this year's MLBB world championship tournament. The way they won their heated grand finals of the Myanmar Qualifier against Mythic SEAL was not convincing enough for them to guarantee an excellent performance on the grandest stage of MLBB esports.
We even branded Falcon Esports as a Dark Horse in our Swiss Stage predictions, only expecting them to surprise some teams but failing to advance further. They eventually proved us and most doubters wrong with an impressive win against Aurora. However, their form dipped after losing to Twisted Minds in round two. But Falcon Esports were quick to regain their momentum after securing their huge win over Selangor Red Giants.
Doubts were erased after that victory, and a 2-1 win against BloodThirstyKings cemented Falcon Esports' position as one of the teams that needed to be highlighted more. Even so, Ar Sy still welcomes those who think their results so far have been no more than a fluke.
Falcon Esports' victory over BloodThirstyKings notably raised questions on how they could stop the best player-hero combo in the tournament: Michael “MobaZane” Cosgun and Fredrinn – a pairing not even Fnatic ONIC PH could stop. But the Burmese squad did it not only once, but twice. And while it was apparent that Falcon Esports had already identified Fredrinn's weakness, their ability to limit the hero's presence to a mere practice target with their poke-focused composition has been nothing short of impressive.
BloodThirstyKings erroneously doubted Falcon Esports had figured out how to counter MobaZne's Fredrinn, something they were more than happy to correct. After the match, Ar Sy shared his thoughts regarding Fredrinn.
“If he still continues picking Fredrinn, everybody can see his weakness. I think, in game one, game two, and game three, we already knew Fredrinn's weakness. That’s why (we can win).”
In game one, BloodThirstyKings surprised everyone when they picked Joy in the EXP Lane for Ian “FwydChickn” Hohl. That also surprised the Falcon Esports players, as they could not contain FwydChickn's onslaught. But after a game's worth of studying the hero, they completely dismantled it the next time their opponents picked it.
“In game one, we were surprised they picked Joy, so we were not ready for him; that’s why we lost. But, after game one, we gathered and talked to each other, so we already knew how to counter the Joy.”
Finally, after qualifying for the Knockout Stage, we asked Ar Sy the most pressing question for their campaign for this year's MLBB world title: which teams were they most excited to face in Knockouts? Their choice surprised no one, but the reason might be.
“Fnatic ONIC PH, because I want to face my own country(men). Good luck, ONIC PH; we’ll see you in the grand finals.”
While Fnatic ONIC PH are the team Falcon Esports are most excited to face, they will first have to go through Singapore's NIP Flash in the upper bracket quarterfinals. A victory against the Singaporeans might give Ar Sy his preferred matchup with Fnatic ONIC PH – assuming the Filipino team can defeat their opponents in Selangor Red Giants. It will surely be interesting to see whether Team Falcons can progress further in the tournament and continue to prove all their doubters wrong.
The M6 World Championship will take place from November 21 to December 15 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is split into three distinct phases: the Wildcard Stage from November 21 to 24, the Swiss Stage from November 28 to December 5, and the Knockout Stage from December 7 to 15.
Sixteen teams have qualified for the Swiss Stage after a gruelling Wildcard Stage. All participants will fight for their lives in the tournament, as only eight slots are open for the Knockout Stage. For everything you need to know about the M6 World Championship, check here.
