Heated finish of G-League with 4 teams still gunning for playoffs

Orange eSports, Made in Thailand and Turtle Master have already punched their ticket to the G-League playoffs, but four other teams are still in the mix to contend for the coveted fourth and final playoff seed. This is not all the excitement the last day of G-League competition brings, as the demotion struggle is wide open as well.

Three days ago the G-League playoff race seemed to be one of the most boring yet with bRix holding a four point lead over iMpunity.Storm and a five point advantage over Neolution eSports.MRR. Everything seemed to go so well for the Malaysian team, their eyes all set on the second playoff appearance in a row. Now the whole situation has shifted around and four teams are in contention for the fourth and final playoff berth for the right to compete against Turtle Master in the first round. Expected teams like bRix, Neolution eSports.MRR and iMpunity.Storm are still alive, but also the promotion team of Insidious eSports still has a real shot to get there.

However you twist and turn the situation though, the best odds are with the reigning runner-up of G-League in Neo.MRR. The Thai team was way down a couple of days ago, but rallied back, while bRix and ImpS struggled. Today they even had the opportunity to get a massive step closer to the playoffs on the second map against Open House Party, but ultimately ended up splitting the series - resulting in the wide open situation we have now. A victory of MRR would have shut out iMpunity.Storm and Insidious eSports from contention and would have given the Thai team a three point advantage over the Malaysian team of bRix. Now it's tighter and MRR needs a win against a direct rival in iMpunity.Storm to make the playoffs again.

All other teams need several things to occur, all starting with MRR either splitting the series or losing it. For bRix a win against FunFunPlace coupled with a tie or a loss of MRR would be enough to sneak into the playoffs for a second straight time. Impunity.Storm, who lost today against Anti Moon Queen, need to desperately win the match against Neolution eSports.MRR and they also need help from Gspeed AVI and FunFunPlace. Both those teams need to at least tie against Insidious eSports and bRix respectively, in order for NoVa and Emperor still having a chance to reach their first G-League playoffs.

Insidious Gaming on the other side has already surpassed all the expectations from their debut season in G-League, but with a perfect storm and bRix only splitting the series, the newcomer team from Indonesia could be playoff bound. The prospect of ImpS being super motivated for their chances might help them to overcome Neolution eSports.MRR, but the chance of bRix to lose against FunFunPlace is rather slim.

On the other side of the spectrum we have Vietnam minion Team and 2nd Runner Up are already out of G-League and will join SEA D1 next cycle, but KaiD, Step Gods and Gspeed AVI are still in jeopardy of suffering that fate. Two of those three teams will spend the third SEA HoN Tour cycle in the D1 division, while only one team can hang on to their G-League status here.

The worst situation is the Thai team from KaiD in, who only have 10 points after 14 rounds in G-League. With that being said, they are two points shy of the saving shore and are in just one split series away from going back to D1 again. Their last match against 2nd Runner up might be a relieve for them, as the Indonesian team has not made a lot of strides yet and is already out, but a win by KaiD is not going to cut it for the third place finisher of the Thai HoN Tour last time.

They also need Step Gods and Gspeed AVI to lose at least on of their maps. Given the fact that those two teams are playing squads that are either still in the playoff hunt or have done great this season is lending creedance to the scenario that KaiD might still make it out of this danger zone alive - after they spend most of the cycle down at the bottom. If KaiD just ties the series or one of the other teams win their match, they are out. In the battle between the tied Gspeed AVI and Step Gods is the Thai team of Step Gods in a position of strength, as they won the direct duel and will prevail if the point and map score stays equal - Gspeed AVI needs to make something going, but facing off against Insidious eSports this might spell doom for the team, that merely survived the demotion struggle in cycle 1 already.
