Only two invites survive till DreamHack Bucharest quarter finals

The trend continues as invited players continue losing to open qualifier players. This time, it was only Kolento and Firebat who managed to persist through the top sixteen round.

Once again, a major tournament has the potential of being won by an open qualifier winner. After ESL Katowice, Viagame HouseCup and almost SeatStory Cup III getting unlikely champions, DreamHack Bucharest too might have one.

It was a culling last night as the playoffs round of PGL Tavern Tales began. Eight qualified players went against eight invited ones and as the dust settled, only two of the latter were alive.

It’s almost unsurprising that the aforementioned two are world’s #1 James “Firebat” Kostesich and world’s #2 Aleksandr “Kolento” Malsh. Being one of the best players in 2014, the two are continuing their legacy in the new year as well, already having tournament championships to their name. Firebat recently ran away with two Gfinity Spring trophies while Kolento has four gold medals of varying esteem, excelling at Legendary Series #2, KFC Winter, Gamers Assembly and CN vs EU Season 2.

Firebat and Kolento are also on the opposite sides of the bracket so fans’ hope of a historic grand final has all the chances of happening. The two will have to go through a mighty opposition of qualifier players, however. Names like Jakub “Lothar” Szygulski, Harald “Powder” Gimre, Stanislav Cifka and Assembly Winter champion Teun “Vortex” Eleits are also hungry for a championship.

The tournament starts soon, and here are the quarter final pairings:
