Jace's latest mess has given Magic players some of the strangest character twists the Multiverse has seen yet.
Wizards of the Coast has pulled back the curtain on Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Reality Fracture set, revealing its Echoed Pairs, new and returning mechanics, Booster Fun treatments, and a detailed breakdown of what players can find across its Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander decks, and other products.
At the centre of Reality Fracture is Jace Beleren's Echoverse, a mirrored reality where the histories of familiar characters played out very differently. That means Magic players will run into versions of Chandra, Liliana, Garruk, Ajani, Edgar Markov, and more who took completely different paths from their Multiverse counterparts.
The main Reality Fracture set contains 71 commons, 109 uncommons, 64 rares, and 26 mythic rares, alongside 10 common dual lands and 10 default-frame basic lands. Its Reality Fracture Commander set adds another 16 rares and two mythic rares that are new to Magic.
MTG Reality Fracture Echoed Pairs and alternate character cards
Echoed Pairs are one of Reality Fracture's biggest hooks, pairing a character from the existing Magic Multiverse with their counterpart from Jace's Echoverse.
There are 86 individual Echoed Pair cards in the set:
- 66 uncommon Echoed Pair cards
- 14 rare Echoed Pair cards
- Six mythic rare Echoed Pair cards
Each Echoed Pair consists of two cards of the same rarity, and non-foil and traditional foil versions can appear in both Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. Reality Fracture also has 10 uncommon, 14 rare, and six mythic rare individual borderless Echoed Pair cards.
Some of the alternate characters revealed so far go well beyond a simple costume change:
- Chandra, Torch of Defiance / Chandra, Chill of Compliance: Instead of the impulsive pyromancer from the Multiverse, Echoverse Chandra is a calm and disciplined cryomancer who became an Avishkar consul shieldguard. She suppresses rebellion on behalf of the Consulate and has sided with the Theorist's vision for reality.
- Garruk, Curse Breaker / Garruk, Veiled Butcher: Echoverse Garruk accepted the Chain Veil after the demon Kothophed offered it as a way to suppress the beast within him. He now serves as an assassin for the Theorist, hunting threats throughout the Echoverse.
- Liliana the Repentant / Liliana the Faultless: Echoverse Liliana successfully cured her brother rather than condemning him through necromancy. She went on to become a powerful healer before taking the role of Professor Opal, headmaster of Hexhaven Academy and instructor at Vigorbloom.
- Ajani Resolute / Ajani Unrelenting: Rather than following the more compassionate path of his Multiverse counterpart, Echoverse Ajani responded to Jazal's death with vengeance. His magic became attack-focused as he carved through those he blamed for his brother's death.
- Edgar, Ancient Bloodlord / Edgar, Moonlit Sovereign: Edgar Markov is not a vampire at all in the Echoverse. He instead received lycanthropy from a demonic patron, with the Markovs becoming Innistrad's first werewolf pack. His grandson Sorin eventually betrayed and imprisoned him in the Helvault.
Vraska, Fblthp, Danitha Capashen, Arni Brokenbrow, Karn, and plenty of other characters also have counterparts across Reality Fracture, with Wizards continuing to add revealed cards to the set's card gallery.
MTG Reality Fracture new mechanics including Empower Jace and Heartwood tokens
Reality Fracture is also bringing Jace's attempt to rewrite the Multiverse directly onto the battlefield through Empower Jace. Whenever a card tells a player to empower Jace, it first checks whether they control a Jace planeswalker token. If they do, the specified number of loyalty counters is placed on one of those tokens. If they do not, they create a blue Jace planeswalker token with zero loyalty before adding the specified counters.
The token itself has two loyalty abilities:
- −1: Surveil 1
- −3: Draw a card
Jace Planeswalker tokens are not legendary, meaning players can control more than one if they find another way to create them, although Empower Jace itself will add loyalty to an existing token rather than creating another one.
Reality Fracture also introduces Heartwood tokens, a new predefined token type. Each Heartwood is a red and green artifact token that can tap to produce either red or green mana, making them useful for both ramp and strategies that care about artifact count. Wizards has also noted that early printings of Heartwood tokens use the colourless artifact frame despite the tokens themselves being red and green according to their reminder text.
Prepare also returns following Secrets of Strixhaven. Preparation cards have a creature on the main portion of the card and a separate Prepare spell on the right side of the text box. When the permanent becomes prepared, a copy of its Prepare spell is created in exile. The controller can then cast that copy normally by paying its costs. The copy disappears if the permanent leaves the battlefield or becomes unprepared, while casting the spell also causes its holder to become unprepared. Some cards can later become prepared again to create another copy.

Each Reality Fracture Play Booster box contains 30 Play Boosters, with every pack containing 14 Magic cards plus a punch-out counter card or double-sided token.
Common card slots
Each Play Booster contains 5–6 common cards.
- 71 Reality Fracture commons can appear in these slots.
- One of the set's 10 Special Guests replaces a common in 1 out of every 55 Play Boosters.
Uncommon card slot
Each Play Booster contains one uncommon card.
- 43 uncommons can appear in the slot.
- An uncommon Braintwister Series card appears 3.8% of the time.
- Echoed Pair cards do not appear in this slot.
Common or uncommon card slot
Each Play Booster also contains one additional common or uncommon card.
- A common appears 23% of the time.
- An uncommon appears 74% of the time.
- An uncommon Braintwister Series card appears 3% of the time.
- Echoed Pair cards do not appear in this slot.
Echoed Pair card slots
- Each Play Booster contains three Echoed Pair cards.
- Uncommon Echoed Pair cards appear at 88.9%.

Reality Fracture serialized and special card treatments
There are approximately 6,000 copies of each rare facet foil shattered mirror card and around 3,000 copies of each mythic rare version. These cards can appear in Collector Boosters in any language, but the cards themselves are always printed in English.
Bloodline Recollector is the set's serialized headliner, with just 500 numbered double rainbow foil copies. These can also appear in Collector Boosters of any language but will always be printed in English.
Reality Fracture also includes several other Booster Fun treatments:
- Five rare and eight mythic rare shattered mirror cards.
- 10 uncommon, 14 rare, and six mythic rare individual borderless Echoed Pair cards.

MTG Reality Fracture release date and regional product delays
Reality Fracture Prerelease events will run from 25 September to 1 October, followed by the set's MTG Arena release on 29 September and worldwide tabletop launch on 2 October.
Reality Fracture itself will be legal in all formats. Reality Fracture Commander and Special Guests cards will be legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, as well as any other formats where individual cards are already legal. Special Guests opened from Reality Fracture Play Boosters can also be played in the set's Draft and Sealed environments.
Some of the physical products will not make that 2 October date everywhere, however. Wizards updated its regional delay notice on 17 September after production and shipping issues affected parts of the release.
Play Boosters and Prerelease Packs remain on schedule in every region, although Wizards previously warned that Play Booster supply could become tight in North America in the weeks following launch.
Status of other regions:
- Japan: All Reality Fracture products are currently on schedule.
- Asia-Pacific: Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Reality Fracture Commander decks may arrive after release. Foundations Commander decks are unaffected.
- Europe, the Middle East, and Africa: Collector Boosters are delayed, with limited availability expected around launch, while Secret Lair Bundles are also delayed.
- North America: Omega Collector Boosters, the individual Collector Boosters sold through larger retailers, are delayed.
- Latin America: Secret Lair Bundles are delayed.
Wizards said the situation remains fluid and advised players to check with local game stores or retailers for product availability in their region.
