Kingdom Hearts IV had a few more surprises waiting when its extended trailer arrived at D23.
Disney and Square Enix gave Kingdom Hearts IV a much longer showing at D23 2026, with a new four-minute trailer revealing far more than the Coco world shown just a day earlier.
Shown during the Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts panel, the extended trailer opens with more of Sora's adventure in the Land of the Dead before moving beyond Coco. King Mickey's search for clues about Sora leads into an unusual storybook sequence, while Donald and Goofy head to the Underworld and find Hades.
There's also plenty happening back in Quadratum, including a huge Heartless attack, while the Master of Masters appears among the new story scenes. But after revealing Mickey, Donald and Goofy as playable characters, Square Enix still had one huge surprise left, with Riku stepping into Quadratum in the trailer's final moments.
Kingdom Hearts IV
Developer: Square Enix
Release date: Late 2027
Platforms: Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
King Mickey, Donald, and Goofy are playable in Kingdom Hearts IV
Mickey is the first of the three shown under player control, and his section takes Kingdom Hearts IV in a very different direction. His search leads him into a storybook where the pages themselves unfold into the environment around him. Some sections keep Mickey in the familiar third-person perspective, moving through fully 3D spaces formed from the book. At other points, the action flattens onto the page and shifts into a more 2D, side-scrolling perspective. The footage also plays with Mickey's size and shows multiple versions of him appearing, as he makes his way through the changing environment.
Donald and Goofy's search for Sora takes them to the Underworld, where Hades tells the pair that Sora isn't there. Their trip doesn't end there, however, with both characters getting their own playable combat sections against the Heartless. Donald puts his magic to work while Goofy fights with his shield, and the two can combine their abilities during battle. Another sequence has them speeding through the Underworld using some form of traversal as their search continues.
Riku also appears in the trailer, although Square Enix doesn't show him under player control. His brief appearance in Quadratum confirms that he's part of Kingdom Hearts IV, but the trailer doesn't reveal how involved he'll be, or whether he'll eventually be playable.
Kingdom Hearts IV will launch in late 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
