We now have a glimpse of Dragon Quest 12.
Square Enix has officially revealed a first look at Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. The 12th mainline Dragon Quest game, which was originally announced as “Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate” in 2021, has been given a new name following its rebooted development.
While the game is still a ways off from a release, we now have an official first look at its characters, world, and gameplay:
Why did Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams restart development?
Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams is the recently-revealed 12th mainline game in the beloved Dragon Quest RPG franchise. The game was originally revealed in 2021 under a different title, The Flames of Fate. However, executive producer Yosuke Saito and game designer Yuji Horii explained during a livestream held today (27 May) that the sequel’s development has gone through some rough patches.
The duo confirmed that the game’s development team had been reshuffled since its original announcement, and its development had been restarted entirely. Hence, as they explained: “It’s going to be a bit longer till it’s in your hands.”
Saito and Horii affirmed that they believed rebooting the project was the right decision to make Dragon Quest XII “one that all you fans of the series will really love.”
What is Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams about?
Few details were shared regarding the all-new Dragon Quest game, but both Saito and Horii confirmed that it will feature character designs from the late Akira Toriyama, who has provided character designs for the franchise for decades. Koichi Sugiyama will also return to compose the game’s music.
The duo also shared a new trailer for Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, which features its new world, protagonist, monsters, and gameplay. As for its story, the duo shared the following premise:
“It’s the story of a young hero who’s beset by strange visions in their sleep. What lies beyond dreams? Surely not a world of darkness, but a bright and exciting future.”
Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams does not have a release date yet.
