Mega Mewtwo is finally coming.
Niantic has confirmed that Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Global will be free to access, marking a major shift for the annual summer event as the mobile hit celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Set to run across 11 to 12 July, players worldwide will be able to take part in Special Research and enjoy boosted Shiny rates without needing to purchase a ticket.
It is a notable move for one of Pokémon GO’s biggest calendar events, lowering the barrier for casual and returning players while still leaning on in-game systems such as Raid Passes and the recently introduced Link Charge currency.
What is included in Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Global?
For 2026, Niantic is opening up core event features to everyone. Global players can access the event’s Special Research questline and benefit from increased Shiny encounter rates at no cost. This effectively mirrors perks that were previously locked behind paid tickets, making the anniversary edition feel more like a full-scale community celebration.
However, while entry is free, progression will still depend on in-game resources. Raiding, in particular, will remain central to the experience, especially with the debut of one of the franchise’s most anticipated Mega Evolutions.
Will Pokémon GO Fest 2026 still require in-game purchases?
While the event itself is free to enter, players should still expect to rely on consumables like Raid Passes and Link Charge currency to fully engage with its content. With Super Mega Raids at the centre of the experience, resource management will likely play a key role in how much players can accomplish across the two-day window.
It remains unclear how generous Niantic will be with free resources during the event, something that could shape overall player sentiment once the festival begins.
Pokémon GO Fest 2026 in-person and ingame events
Ahead of the global event, Niantic will host its usual trio of in-person Pokémon GO Fest celebrations. This year’s locations include Chicago, Copenhagen, and Tokyo, with the latter already nearing capacity.
These live events will offer early access to Mega Mewtwo raids, featuring massive lobbies of over 1,000 players battling simultaneously, a scale that also provides significant speed bonuses.

In addition to Mega Mewtwo, attendees can look forward to the debut of the Mythical Pokémon Zeraora, alongside new costumed Pikachu, Shiny Wash Rotom, Shiny Tauros, and the regional Pokémon Comfey. One of the more light-hearted additions is a costumed Caterpie sporting a Poké Ball hat, adding a touch of personality to the otherwise raid-heavy event.
Mega Mewtwo X and Y debut in Super Mega Raids
After years of teasing, Mega Mewtwo will finally make its debut in both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y forms. The powerhouse Pokémon will appear in the newly-introduced Super Mega Raids, designed for large-scale group play.
These encounters will require sizeable crowds to complete, pushing players towards coordinated raiding sessions. Upon victory, trainers will have a chance to catch Mewtwo and earn either Mega Energy X or Mega Energy Y, depending on the raid outcome, which can then be used to Mega Evolve it into their preferred form.
Why does Mega Mewtwo use different Mega Energy?
One of the more interesting changes this year is the split between Mega Energy X and Mega Energy Y for Mewtwo’s two forms. Unlike previous cases such as Mega Charizard X and Y, which share a single energy pool, Mewtwo’s forms require separate resources.
Mega Level progression has also been divided for Pokémon with multiple Mega Evolutions, although any existing progress will carry over. The system appears to be designed to encourage longer-term engagement, giving players more reason to revisit raids and continue building up both forms over time.
How to Mega Evolve Mewtwo in Pokémon GO Fest 2026
Mega Mewtwo’s long-awaited debut also introduces a unique Mega Evolution system built specifically around its two forms. Trainers can Mega Evolve any Mewtwo they already own into either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y, though both forms require significantly more Mega Energy than standard Mega Evolutions.
This energy will be available for the first time through Super Mega Raids during Pokémon GO Fest 2026, where defeating Mega Mewtwo X or Y rewards the corresponding energy type needed for each form.
As part of the event’s launch bonus, every Mewtwo caught from Super Mega Raids will already have at least one Mega Level unlocked. This means it can be Mega Evolved immediately without paying the usual initial energy cost—and if luck is on your side, it may even start at Mega Level 2 or 3.
How to get Mega Mewtwo X and Y Energy
Mega Mewtwo uses two separate energy types: Mega Mewtwo X Energy and Mega Mewtwo Y Energy. Each is tied directly to its respective raid:
- Defeat Mega Mewtwo X in Super Mega Raids to earn Mega Mewtwo X Energy
- Defeat Mega Mewtwo Y in Super Mega Raids to earn Mega Mewtwo Y Energy
During GO Fest Global, players can also obtain Mega Energy through Timed Research, adding another route to progression beyond raiding.
For those attending in-person events in Chicago, Copenhagen, or Tokyo, early access is available through branching Timed Research in the City Experience. This guarantees an encounter with either Mega Mewtwo X or Y, already with its first Mega Level unlocked. Park Sessions will also feature live Mega Mewtwo battles, with further details to be shared closer to the event.
Mega Evolution system changes explained
Mega Mewtwo’s arrival also brings broader updates to Pokémon GO’s Mega Evolution system. One of the biggest additions is the ability to spend excess Mega Energy to speed up Mega Level progression, removing the need to wait for the usual daily cooldown.
Progression is now also split between different Mega forms. In Mewtwo’s case, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y will level independently.
This change extends to other Pokémon as well. Charizard, for example, will now require separate Mega Energy for its X and Y forms, though any existing Mega Level progress will carry across both after the update. Previously collected energy will also be duplicated into both energy types.
Featured attacks for Mega Mewtwo raids
Mewtwo caught during Pokémon GO Fest 2026 will come with event-specific moves depending on where and how they are encountered.
At in-person GO Fest events, ticket holders will receive Mewtwo with both the Fast Attack Counter and the Charged Attack Psystrike.
During GO Fest Global, the moves are split by raid type:
- Mewtwo from Mega Mewtwo X raids will know Counter
- Mewtwo from Mega Mewtwo Y raids will know Psystrike
This adds another layer of decision-making for players choosing which raids to prioritise, particularly for those chasing optimal builds for raids and PvP.
With Mega Mewtwo finally entering the fold, the anniversary celebration looks set to be one of the game’s most significant updates yet, both for dedicated raiders and those simply returning to see what has changed.
