Though some elements of Resynced will change, Edward Kenway's story will remain the same.
Ubisoft has officially lifted the curtain on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a full remake of the 2013 pirate classic, during a showcase aired on 24 April (SGT) via YouTube.
Ubisoft described the remake as a “faithful remake, totally rebuilt from the ground up with the latest version of the Anvil engine”, before locking 9 July 2026 as the game's release date.

What is Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced?
Set more than a decade after the original, Black Flag Resynced revisits Edward Kenway’s rise as a pirate and his entanglement in the Assassin–Templar conflict. Ubisoft emphasised that the remake keeps “the same story, the same man,” but pushes immersion further with upgraded systems and expanded content.
Paul Fu, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced’s Creatived Director, stressed that this is not a reinvention. “The one thing that was non-negotiable is the original story of Edward Kenway,” he said, adding that the team focused on carrying forward the original vision while using newer technology to enhance gameplay, visuals, and world design.
The remake also stays firmly in its lane as a single-player, story-driven experience, with developers confirming there is no multiplayer or DLC included. Instead, the focus is entirely on Edward’s Caribbean adventure.
What changes have been made to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced’s gameplay?
The showcase delivered a first look at gameplay, highlighting major overhauls across combat, stealth, parkour, and naval systems. Combat has been reworked into a more action-driven system, featuring faster attacks, precise parries, and chained takedowns. Players can now link up to four eliminations in sequence, while environmental elements such as walls and breakables play a bigger role in fights.
Parkour has also been refined, building on newer Assassin’s Creed systems while retaining Edward’s classic movement set. Free jumps, back ejects, and side ejects return with smoother transitions, allowing for tighter control and faster traversal.
Stealth sees one of the biggest changes. Players can now crouch freely, opening up more tactical approaches. Missions involving tailing or eavesdropping no longer fail instantly upon detection, instead, targets react dynamically, forcing players to adapt rather than restart.
The Caribbean world in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has been updated
The Caribbean setting has been overhauled with improved visuals and systemic upgrades. Ubisoft highlighted high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting, and a dynamic weather system that directly impacts gameplay at sea.
Locations such as Havana, Kingston, and Nassau return with distinct identities shaped by political control and economic activity. The world is now seamlessly connected, allowing players to move between cities, jungles, and open waters without interruption. Underwater exploration has also been expanded, described as “more expansive, more beautiful, and more perilous than ever before.”
Is naval combat changing in Black Flag Resynced?
Naval gameplay remains a core pillar, with the Jackdaw returning at the centre of the experience. The ship now features expanded weapon systems, including alternate fire modes that add flexibility in combat scenarios. Sea conditions play a more active role, with waves and weather influencing ship handling. Players can still engage in boarding, raids, and large-scale naval battles, now enhanced with additional tactical depth.
The remake also introduces three new officers, Lucy Baldwin, the Padre, and Deadman Smith, each with their own narrative questlines and gameplay perks. For example, Deadman Smith unlocks a double-shot broadside ability. Players can also recruit companions for the Jackdaw, including a cat or monkey, adding smaller but notable touches to ship life.
Are there new story elements and characters in Black Flag Resynced?
While the core narrative remains unchanged, Black Flag Resynced adds new missions and storylines designed to blend seamlessly with the original. Developers noted that additional content was carefully integrated to ensure continuity, with the goal that players “won’t notice where the original ends and the new content begins.” Among the additions is a new scene featuring Edward’s wife, Caroline, written by original writer Darby McDevitt.
Familiar figures such as Blackbeard return, alongside expanded narrative arcs tied to both new and existing characters. The modern-day segments have also been adjusted, shifting focus towards Edward’s internal struggles while maintaining connections to the wider Assassin’s Creed universe.
Black Flag’s composer returning to make music for Resynced
The showcase confirmed that composer Woodkid is returning to the franchise, contributing a newly reimagined track for Black Flag Resynced. His involvement ties back to earlier Assassin’s Creed titles, reinforcing the remake’s focus on legacy. Sea shanties, which contributed to the original game’s memorable music are also back, alongside new additions linked to the story. Matt Ryan also reprises his role as Edward Kenway.
