A Bloodborne remake almost happened, but FromSoftware turned it down

A Bloodborne remake was pitched in 2025, but it has now been revealed that FromSoftware themselves rejected the proposal.

FromSoftware’s Bloodborne is regarded as of the greatest Souls-like games of all time, with many fans still waiting for the 2015 title to receive a remake or a remaster. However, with Sony's remake-specialised studio Bluepoint shutting down last week, that dream now seems to have been crushed, and many pointed fingers to Sony for failing to bring the anticipated remaster to life.

Completely changing the narrative, a new Bloomberg report has revealed that a Bloodborne remaster was indeed pitched–and it wasn’t Sony that shelved the idea, but FromSoftware itself.

Bloodborne is widely praised as one of Miyazaki’s finest works. It is a combat-heavy Souls game, featuring Gothic-style visuals and unique weapons that offered players a fresh approach to the challenging genre. However, as an 11-year-old game, Bloodborne remains locked at 30fps and other last-generation specifications, leading players to explore alternative methods–such as modding–to experience the game on modern hardware.

Hopes for enhanced visuals and improved performance were recently dashed, following news of Bluepoint Games’ closure. On 20 February, Sony announced that Bluepoint, the studio responsible for major remasters including titles from the God of War and Metal Gear Solid franchises, would be shutting down.

While this effectively ended speculation surrounding a Bloodborne remake, it appears that the remaster was never particularly likely to happen in the first place.

Bloodborne remake turned down by FromSoftware

Bloomberg reported that Bluepoint had pitched a Bloodborne remake in 2025, stating that “the numbers made sense, but FromSoftware didn’t want it to happen”. This aligns with comments from former Sony Interactive Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida, who suggested that Miyazaki was simply too busy to explore the idea.

“Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, what he created. So I think he is interested, but he's so successful and he's so busy, so he cannot do it himself-and he doesn't want anyone else to touch it,” Yoshida stated in the interview with Kinda Funny Games.

After their Bloodborne proposal was rejected, Bluepoint reportedly followed up with other suggestions to Sony, including a Shadow of the Colossus remake and a Ghost of Tsushima spin-off. However, they were told that other studios were “concerned about dedicating significant resources to another team’s project,” the report claimed.

Unfortunately, it seems that fans of Bloodborne will have to rely on alternative methods to experience the game in higher resolutions and frame rates–at least for the foreseeable future.
