Blizzard is reportedly set to reveal a StarCraft shooter at BlizzCon 2026

StarCraft lives.

Blizzard Entertainment is reportedly developing a brand-new installment in the StarCraft game franchise. According to a recent report from Windows Central, Blizzard is planning for the new StarCraft game to headline BlizzCon 2026 later this year, alongside other announcements from its ongoing live service games.

New StarCraft game shows signs of life, planned for a reveal at BlizzCon 2026

Blizzard Entertainment was first discovered to be working on a new StarCraft video game last year, when industry insider and journalist Jason Schreier confirmed as much in his book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. The book delved into the history of Blizzard Entertainment as a company, and its work on iconic franchises like Warcraft and Diablo.

The book noted that development on the new StarCraft game was being helmed by Dan Hay, an ex-Ubisoft developer who had previously led development on the Far Cry series. The game is now reportedly planned for a big reveal at BlizzCon 2026, alongside showings for Diablo IV’s upcoming expansion Lord of Hatred, and a World of Warcraft expansion.

This is not the first time Blizzard has had a StarCraft shooter in development, of course. The company has tried twice to make this happen. In 2002, Blizzard announced a tactical stealth game called StarCraft Ghost. The game would never come out, and was eventually confirmed to be axed in 2014.

Next, the company attempted to produce another StarCraft first-person shooter called StarCraft: Ares. The game was eventually cancelled to pivot Blizzard’s focus back to titles like Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV. In Schreier’s book Play Nice, it was noted that higher-ups at Activision disliked the project for adapting the gameplay formula of Electronic Arts’ Battlefield franchise, which was viewed internally as being subpar compared to Call of Duty.

The upcoming StarCraft game does not have a title, nor a release date yet. BlizzCon 2026 goes live from 12-13 September, 2026.
