Recap: Zenless Zone Zero 2.5 livestream reveals Ye Shunguang's abilities and free S-Rank Zhao

Pick up an S-Rank Agent for free in Zenless Zone Zero’s next big update!

Game developer HoYoverse held a livestream today to dive into details for Zenless Zone Zero’s upcoming update Version 2.5, titled “To be Fuel For the Night.” This version update sees Season 2’s storyline come to a climax with the introduction of Ye Shunguang, the game’s second Void Hunter. Another S-Rank Agent and Krampus faction member, Zhao, will also be available for everyone to claim for free!

Before we dive into all of the juicy details, don't forget to redeem the Version 2.5 livestream’s code for free Polychromes and in-game resources:

VOIDHUNTER1230: 300 Polychrome, 30,000 Dennies, two Senior Investigator Logs, and three W-Engine Energy Modules.

Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.5’s new Agents Ye Shunguang and Zhao

Ye Shunguang is an S-Rank Honed Edge Attack Agent, with Honed Edge being an all-new sub-Attribute. Her kit relies on her dual forms, with Ye Shunguang being able to enter a more powerful Enlightened Mind state by accumulating Qingming Sword Force in combat. Her Support and Defense teammates can also grant this resource when activating Ether Veil.

After accumulating six points of Qingming Sword Force, Ye Shunguang can activate a powerful Illuminating Darkness AoE attack. She can also expend Qingming Sword Force to deal a ton of damage using her Basic Attacks. Activating her Ultimate while in the Enlightened Mind state will trigger a different Ultimate animation.

Next up is Zhao, an S-Rank Ice Defense Agent. Zhao is able to accumulate Frostbite during combat, allowing her to activate an Entry Skill and Ether Veil: Wellspring upon switching in to grant buffs to her team. She can also provide Attack, Anomaly, and Support Agents buffs based on her maximum HP using Ether Veil: Wellspring.

Zhao seems like a simpler character to master in combat compared to Ye Shunguang. Switch to her in combat to grant buffs to her team, and when switching her out, she will continue to chain her attacks without your involvement. That sets the stage for your more DPS-heavy Agents to shine. Here’s the kicker: Zhao will be available for all players to claim for free! A new Jane Doe skin called Nocturne of Light will also be available for all to claim for free, simply by logging in.

Sprout, a sword-slinging Bangboo, is also coming in Version 2.5. Version 2.5’s banners will unfold much like Version 1.4’s, allowing players to access both Zhao and Ye Shunguang’s character and W-Engine Signal Search banners immediately.

A new twist: Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.5 gets rid of the 50-50 rule for a limited-time banner

That doesn’t mean you don’t have anything to look forward to in Version 2.5’s second half, however. A new Signal Search banner called “Exclusive Rescreening” will debut in the second half, allowing players to specifically choose their first pulled S-Rank Agent. That means the game’s usual 50-50 chance of pulling a limited S-Rank Agent is being abolished for this banner alone. They’ll be able to choose between Alice, Soldier 0 - Anby, and Astra Yao.

Additionally, the same rule applies to the second half’s new W-Engine banner “W-Engine Reverberation,” which allows players to choose which of the aforementioned Agents’ W-Engines to pull for. Your pity for these banners will be carried over to their next iteration when they return, so your pulls won’t go to waste in the long run. However, this pity will be separate from the main banners’ pity.

Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.5’s new story content

Sarah’s season-long schemes are coming to a major climax. Belle, Wise, Ye Shunguang, and many of the game’s existing characters are coming together for a major battle against Sarah and a corrupted Ye Shiyuan. The fate of the Waifei Peninsula is at stake, as Season 2’s story careens towards its eventual finale.

HoYoverse made a note of “hope” being the main theme of this update’s story missions, so expect a more upbeat plot compared to recent updates. Granted, this is just the midway point of Season 2, making this a climax–not the climax, if you get our meaning.

Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.5’s new events and game modes

As always, Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.5 will add a host of new events for players to partake in. Let’s run them down:

Sword Seeker Chronicles: This event will allow players to follow Ye Shunguang’s journey following the events of the main story, as an epilogue to Version 2.5.

Joint Investigation: The Divine Maze: At long last, co-op multiplayer combat is coming to Zenless Zone Zero! This mode will have players control just one Agent each, with new combat mechanics allowing players to take down enemies in tandem. Nine Agents will be available, some of whom come with new skills.

Shadow Riptide Clash: A new VR combat event will have players participate in VR battles for rewards, this time with Ye Shunguang and Zhao in tow.

Angels and Delusions of Muse: The Angels of Delusion idol faction finally makes its in-game debut! The upcoming playable characters will interact with Proxies in this event.

Wish Filing Station: Players can expend Battery to get Wish Bottles, and exchange them for rewards in this returning event.

Advanced Bounty: Area Patrol and Data Bounty: Combat Simulation: These double-drop resource events return for Version 2.5, allowing players to upgrade Agents faster.

Filmgoer Thank-You Gift: By purchasing Monochromes or making other purchases in the shop using real-world money, players can collect ticket stubs. These stubs can be exchanged for an S-Rank Agent and S-Rank W-Engine, on top of other cosmetics. These S-Rank Agents include limited-time characters like Burnice, Jane Doe, and Qingyi.

Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.5’s new quality-of-life changes

Starting with Version 2.5, players will be able to skip to the latest in-game story chapter, bypassing all previously-released story content to catch up. Additionally, players will soon be able to skip through regular dialogue outside of cinematics. Sub-stat customisation will also be available for Drive Discs, though players will have to expend Tuning Calibrators to get a new resource for it.

Standard Agents and limited-time Agents will also be looked at for future combat enhancements, making them stronger and more fun to play in the ever-shifting meta. A few Agents are getting upgrades Version 2.5 itself, via the Potential Vision system. These Agents are Burnice, Soldier 11, Ellen Joe, Soldier 0–Anby, and Grace. Players will have to earn a resource to upgrade these Agents by completing Ridu Weekly missions.

Players will also be able to join a Proxy Outpost in this update, which functions much like a multiplayer social clan. Players will be able to post and accept delegated Commissions, which can be completed either by themselves or fellow Outpost members. A photo mode is also coming in Version 2.5, allowing players to take pictures of their favourite Agents outside of selfies.

Zenless Zone Zero Version 2.5 launches on 30 December, 2025.
