Horizon Steel Frontiers brings players together in Aloy’s post-apocalyptic world.
PlayStation Studios and Guerrilla Games’ action-adventure Horizon franchise is getting an MMORPG spin-off. The upcoming MMO is called Horizon Steel Frontiers, developed by South Korean company NCSoft, a video game distributor known for distributing Guild Wars 2.
The game will allow players to work together in multiplayer zones, while fending off the video game franchise’s iconic machine-made monsters. Here’s the official developer commentary trailer:
Horizon Steel Frontiers is an ambitious MMO spin-off meant for mobile devices
NCSoft and Sony have unveiled an upcoming MMORPG based on the Horizon franchise, entitled Horizon Steel Frontiers. The game was revealed with a 10-minute video diving into developer commentary from both series creator Guerrilla Games and NCSoft, along with plenty of action-packed gameplay.
The gameplay shown off in the above video hints at a focus on monster hunts and player roles in this MMO, which is in sharp contrast with Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West’s singleplayer-focused story campaign. Large-scale machine battles will play out as hunts much like Monster Hunter, with players able to also adopt mounts, attack specific enemy parts, and more.
In Horizon Steel Frontiers, players will explore a region called the Deathlands, which is inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. Players will take on the roles of machine hunters, sharing the land with thousands of other players and working together to take down machines, while competing with rival tribes and fighting over resources.
Players can step into the shoes of the game series’ existing tribes, like Nora, Tenakth, Utaru, or Oseram. However, the game franchise’s main protagonist, Aloy, is nowhere to be seen. The setting of the game is also unknown in the series timeline, leaving her whereabouts in doubt.
Horizon Steel Frontiers has no release date yet. The game will launch on iOS, Android, and PC platforms.
