Valve is officially returning to its 2015 Steam Machine with a next-gen successor.
Earlier today, Valve made a series of huge hardware announcements for its rapidly-expanding family of Steam Hardware. The video game company is officially returning to its 2015 PC-console hybrid Steam Machine with a next-gen hybrid, also called the Steam Machine.
The Steam Hardware lineup also includes an all-new Steam Controller, which features two large trackpads and better gyro functionality. It also includes the Steam Frame, which is an all-new VR headset with enhanced features that succeeds the Valve Index.
Here’s the hardware reveal:
The Steam Machine: What is it?
Valve is officially making another Steam Machine, allowing players to play their Steam games on a larger TV, and with more powerful hardware to boot. The next-gen Steam Machine will run SteamOS much like the Steam Deck, but is said to be six times more powerful than the handheld gaming console.
The Steam Machine is a humble six-inch cube with a lot of gaming power under the hood, with Valve aiming for the machine to run most games in the Steam library at 4K resolution and a smooth 60fps with FSR (upscaling). The PC-console hybrid has discrete graphics hardware (AMD RDNA3), which delivers roughly the level of power as an RTX 4060 or RX7600 card. That leaves it trailing slightly behind the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles in terms of raw gaming horsepower.
The CPU is a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6C, and the machine comes with 16GB DDR5 + 8GB GDDR6 VRAM. It’s also available in 512GB and 2TB SSD models, with a micro SD card slot included for additional storage. On the software side of things, the Steam Machine also includes improvements for Proton, which allows users to run Windows Games on the SteamOS.
Interestingly, the Steam Machine also includes quite a bit of design flourishes for either added flair or customisation. For example, the machine includes a light bar displayed across the front that displays download progress and specific information. The light bar can be customised, along with the face plate, which is swappable. A 140MM fan keeps the machine cool.
Alas, no price has been confirmed for the Steam Machine just yet.
