FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly remake brings classic horror back in 2026

FATAL FRAME II’s haunting journey through Minakami Village is being reimagined for a new generation of horror fans.

Koei Tecmo Gamss revealed more about FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show broadcast, confirming the game is in development with a release scheduled for early 2026. Director Makoto Shibata described the project as a complete remake of the cult survival horror classic, originally released more than 20 years ago.

A full remake using modern technology

According to Shibata, the remake is being built with Koei Tecmo’s latest in-house engine, delivering fully updated sound and visuals. The studio has focused on recreating the chilling atmosphere of Minakami Village, carefully using light and shadow to capture its unsettling ambience.

“We are remaking a 20-year-old title with the latest technology,” Shibata explained. “I believe we’ve reached a quality that allows players who enjoy a variety of horror games to play this as a new game.”

The audio has been expanded to support modern sound systems, while the graphics overhaul aims to give players a far more immersive experience compared to the original release.

Core gameplay retained with new features added

As with earlier titles in the FATAL FRAME series, combat is centred around the Camera Obscura, which is used to defeat hostile spirits by photographing them. The remake introduces new mechanics, including focus and zoom filters. Each filter functions differently, altering perspective and offering unique ways to engage during combat and exploration.

Shibata noted that switching between filters will be key to progressing, depending on the spirit encountered or the situation at hand. Player controls and animations have also been thoroughly reworked to improve fluidity and responsiveness. The development team emphasised that one of their goals was to provide an experience that feels like “exploring an actual abandoned village.”

The remake also benefits from the involvement of Team Ninja, Koei Tecmo’s internal studio best known for their action RPGs. Co-director Hidehiko Nakajima (Nioh), who has worked extensively on Team Ninja’s action projects, is contributing to the design and combat systems. Their expertise has been used to enhance controls, combat difficulty, and overall polish.

New hand-holding mechanic between the sisters

One of the most notable new features is the addition of a hand-holding mechanic between the two sisters, Mio and Mayu. This element not only impacts the narrative but also influences gameplay, reflecting the bond between the characters. Shibata revealed that the team had originally considered this feature 20 years ago but were unable to implement it at the time. The remake provided an opportunity to revisit the idea with modern tools.

The remake expands the number of explorable areas in Minakami Village, giving players more opportunities to uncover secrets and experience the unsettling environment. Despite being the second entry in the series, FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is designed as a stand-alone story, allowing newcomers to enjoy it without needing prior knowledge of the first game.

FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is scheduled to launch in early 2026. Platforms have not yet been specified, but Koei Tecmo confirmed that this version represents the most detailed and immersive take on the game to date.
