PlayStation 5 consoles get a price hike in the U.S. due to "challenging economic environment"

“Challenging economic environments” are causing PlayStation 5 consoles to get a price hike in the U.S.

Sony has announced a series of surprising price hikes for PlayStation 5, impacting the United States specifically. In a PlayStation Blog post, the company announced that the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation 5 Pro are getting a US$50 price increase due to the "challenging economic environment.”

PlayStation 5 consoles are getting a price increase in the U.S.

Sony Interactive Entertainment is officially dealing out price increases for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. The good news is that PlayStation 5 accessories aren’t affected by the price increase. Here’s Sony’s new recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S:

  • PlayStation 5: $549.99
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition: $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro: $749.99

Sony attributed the price change to “a challenging economic environment,” but failed to elaborate further. Reading between the lines, however, it’s safe to assume that these price changes are taking effect due to the recent U.S. tariffs.

Sony isn’t the first gaming company to issue price increases in recent times, either; Microsoft announced global Xbox price increases earlier in May this year. Nintendo briefly delayed Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. back in April, due to the tariffs.
