Performance concerns marred Wuchang’s launch, with patch fixes and plans underway.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers had all the makings of a breakout Soulslike: haunting visuals, brutal combat, and a rich historical backdrop. However, its launch has been anything but smooth. Upon launch, PC players quickly flooded Steam with complaints about crashes, stuttering, and serious performance issues, particularly affecting those who aren't running top-tier rigs.
Just days after release, developer Leenzee is racing to get the game back on its feet, pushing out two early updates, offering compensation, and vowing to do better.
Quick-fire patches aim to ease performance issues and content problems

Patch 1.3 landed two days after launch, targeting the worst of the game’s technical flaws. Leenzee introduced improvements to VRAM usage, texture memory handling, and supersampling resolution, all designed to help lower-end systems run the game more smoothly and reduce frame drops and crashes.
But performance wasn’t the only thing drawing heat. According to a report by Kotaku, Deluxe Edition owners reported missing rewards and incomplete redemptions. In response, Leenzee has offered additional content: three bonus costume sets and four extra weapons for Deluxe Edition buyers, and three headgear items for all players. The digital soundtrack is also being gifted to everyone who purchased the game.
Patch 1.4 came soon after, which was targeted at fixing optimisatiion issues “for certain device models.”
Developers issue detailed update plan and apologise to players
On 28 July, Leenzee published a detailed Update and Optimisation Plan alongside a sincere apology. The team acknowledged the issues affecting players since launch, emphasised their commitment to listening to community feedback, and promised to improve both the game and their internal workflows.
The plan outlines a range of ongoing and upcoming fixes. Beyond further performance improvements, such as reducing crashes, improving frame rates, and adjusting default graphics settings, the developers are also tuning gameplay itself. These changes include lowering the damage and number of traps in certain areas, speeding up recovery animations after knockdowns, reducing exploration pressure, and tweaking the resistance of early-game monsters.
AI logic for both monsters and bosses is also being refined, and several quest blockers caused by missing items are being addressed. Texture quality and environmental detail are receiving attention as well, particularly in lower-resolution areas.
Leenzee reiterated that all voices, whether critical or supportive, have been heard, and that updates will continue to be rolled out based on player feedback.
Wuchang’s launch has been met with a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam, a tough starting point for any new IP. Yet despite the backlash, it continues to chart among Steam’s top-sellers, showing that interest in its grim, Soulslike world hasn’t faded. Following patches 1.3 and 1.4, the game’s Steam rating has improved from ‘Mostly Negative’ to ‘Mixed’, with 43% of reviews marked as positive.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
