Microsoft announces ROG Xbox Ally X gaming handheld, launches in 2025

Microsoft refers to the handheld device as the “Xbox Ally.”

Microsoft has officially announced its long-rumoured gaming handheld device. As was previously rumoured, the company is teaming up with ROG to release Xbox-themed refreshes of the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X. Xbox announced the big news during this week’s Xbox Games Showcase.

Xbox and Microsoft have announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, two new-but-old handheld devices that feature Xbox-themed UI and Windows 11. Xbox Game Studios touts the device(s) as an Xbox of its very own, being able to play all of the games revealed during this week’s Xbox Games Showcase on the fly. 

Here are the basic specifications of both devices, according to Xbox:

  • ROG Xbox Ally: powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2 A Processor–balancing performance and power consumption to maximize battery life without sacrificing gameplay quality–16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage.
  • ROG Xbox Ally X: features the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor–allowing us to bring new experiences to life including greater frames-per-second, sharp visuals and increased intelligence–double the storage to have more native games at your fingertips, and 24GB of high-speed RAM and 1TB of SSD storage.

The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are both set to launch during the Holiday 2025 season in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
