Mortal Kombat 1 officially ends DLC support as NetherRealm moves to "next project"

Don’t expect more DLC for Mortal Kombat 1.

NetherRealm Studios is officially moving on from Mortal Kombat 1. The developer confirmed on Twitter/X that the fighting game is officially dropping future DLC and expansion support, with the release of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition concluding its two-year lifespan.

Now, NetherRealm is opting to “shift focus” to its next project.

Mortal Kombat 1 officially ends DLC support

NetherRealm Studios has officially ended DLC support for Mortal Kombat 1. The fighting game was released in 2023, serving as a soft reboot of the iconic Mortal Kombat game franchise with a few multiversal shenanigans thrown into its campaign for good measure.

In September 2024, Game director Ed Boon stated on social media that “NetherRealm is still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come.” giving fans hope that the game would receive more DLC following the DLC. The game’s final DLC character, the Terminator T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day launched in March 2025, six months after Boon’s statement.

Earlier this month, NetherRealm Studios launched Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, bundling together all of the game’s previously-released expansions and DLC content. That includes DLC characters from the game’s Kombat Pack 1 and 2, the Khaos Reigns expansion, a few cosmetics, and some in-game currency to boot.

This week, NetherRealm released a statement on the game’s future, saying:

We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.

We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.

NetherRealm released a similar statement to announce the end of Mortal Kombat 11 DLC support in 2021, two years after the game’s launch in 2019. The game studio's next project is currently unknown, but a third Injustice game isn't entirely out of the question. A fan can dream.
