Final Fantasy XIV Mobile to launch in China this June

A global release date is yet to be announced.

Final Fantasy XIV is heading to mobile platforms this June. The release will be limited to China for now, however. The announcement was made via the Chinese platform Bilibili, where a new trailer was also shared. The mobile version is being developed by Lightspeed Studio, a Tencent-owned developer best known for PUBG Mobile, which may explain the decision to launch in China first.

Other players outside the China region may hae to wait though for the global release. However, they can register on the official website to receive updates and information about future testing phases.

Final Fantasy XIV Mobile's closed beta in China will begin on 23 May, ahead of its open beta launch in June.

New Final Fantasy XIV features on mobile

A recent livestream offered new details about the mobile game, including a customisation system with 16 gear dye layers. This feature allows players to personalise their Warrior of Light in much greater detail than the PC and console version, which only introduced its second dye layer in the latest Dawntrail expansion.

A Reddit thread consolidated and translated the Mobile Live Letter Notes, confirming what other new features FFIXIV mobile players can expect. This includes the addition of a dodge button for all classes (with different dodge animations per class), along with auto-pathing to quests, and fates for more accessible navigation. Players can also expect a new UI for combat on mobile, although auto-combat is not included.

Final Fantasy XIV Mobile was officially revealed in November last year by Naoki Yoshida, the original MMORPG's long-standing producer and director. He confirmed that the game will be free-to-play and will not feature gacha mechanics.

The mobile release comes at a time when Square Enix has cancelled several mobile projects, including Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, which was dropped just last week. Despite a decline in mobile game sales, the company has seen growth in its MMO division, thanks in large part to the success of Final Fantasy XIV and the launch of its latest expansion.
