Rocksteady Studios is returning to the Batman: Arkham franchise.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, developer Rocksteady Studios is working on a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Knight. The project will see the studio return to making singleplayer Batman games after a decade, likely due to the financial failure of its last release: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
The report also delivered updates on the rest of Warner Bros. Games’ release slate, including a disappointing update on Wonder Woman.
Rocksteady returns to Batman, Wonder Woman game development stalls
A recent report from Bloomberg dove into Warner Bros. Games’ troubled release slate, following the departure of its longtime president David Haddad. Haddad had stepped down in the midst of a troubling time for the publisher: two big games had launched just recently during his tenure and flopped globally. These games were Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus.
Now, the publisher has several projects in the pipeline facing lengthy development windows. Rocksteady is “looking to return to Batman for a single-player game,” according to the report, 10 years after the release of Batman: Arkham Knight. However, it’s worth noting that “the new project is years away from landing” and could launch even further than that, considering that it took nine years for the studio to deliver its Suicide Squad game.
In the meantime, WB Games Montreal is moving on from the lukewarm response to its last release (Gotham Knights) by working on a pitch for a new Game of Thrones project. The studio had previously planned games around DC Comics’ John Constantine and The Flash as protagonists, but both titles were shot down.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor developer Monolith Productions also announced that it was working on a Wonder Woman game in 2021. However, the fate of this project is reportedly in question amid changes in studio leadership and issues in development.
At this point, Warner Bros. appears to be relying heavily on developer Avalanche Software to replicate the success of Hogwarts Legacy with a sequel. The studio is reportedly working on Hogwarts Legacy 2 along with “new content” for the first game.
