Electronic Arts is already planning a revamp for Apex Legends.
Electronic Arts is apparently developing a “bigger, more meaningful update” for the battle royale shooter Apex Legends. During an earnings call, the company acknowledged that earnings had gone down year-over-year for the game, but a “bigger, more meaningful update” is in the works.
Apex Legends 2.0 officially in the works at EA
EA is officially working on revamping Apex Legends. This week, the company held an earnings call to discuss its performance in the last financial quarter. Chief financial officer Stuart Canfield noted that the game’s “net bookings were down year over year in the quarter but performed in line with our expectations.”
CEO Andrew Wilson further elaborated that “the trajectory of the business of that franchise has not been headed in the direction that we have wanted for some time,” potentially signalling that Apex had not been improving its financial performance in recent times. Wilson noted that developer Respawn Entertainment had been toying around with “more and great content” and that “we have seen some progress in that, but probably not as much as we would have liked.”
Most importantly, Wilson revealed that EA wants to release “a more meaningful update” of the game eventually, which Respawn is already “diligently working on.” According to the call, EA views Apex as a franchise that might last “10, 20, 30 years” with “an even bigger, more meaningful update to that broader game experience and Apex 2.0, if you will” that's in the works.
However, don’t expect “Apex 2.0” to arrive anytime soon. Wilson confirmed that the “more major update” will only be launched after the next Battlefield game, likely to keep both of the publisher’s shooters from cannibalising each other in terms of retaining players. As EA puts it, “we probably wouldn't drop that on top of a Battlefield launch.”
As for the next Battlefield game, Wilson revealed that the title is currently targeting a Fiscal Year 2026 launch window. That would put the game’s release somewhere between April 2025 and March 2026.
