A new trailer for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet shows off new professors, legendaries, Gen 9 Pokemon and more.

The Pokemon Company has released a new gameplay trailer for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, kicking off the ninth generation of Pokemon. The trailer goes over a few differences between the two games, namely the legendary Pokemon Koraidon (Scarlet) and Miraidon (Violet) and the professors Tura and Sada.

Check out the trailer below:

There’s a lot of information to dig into here. Right off the bat, it looks like we’re getting version-specific professors for the first time. Pokemon Scarlet is themed after the past while Pokemon Violet is themed after the future, and its professors reflect that: Scarlet’s professor is named Sada, dressed in animal (or Pokemon) pelts. Violet’s professor is named Turo, and he wears a futuristic bodysuit with a pretty slick hairdo. Both professors wear labcoats, because of science reasons.

The next big version difference is predictable: different legendaries. Pokemon Scarlet gets the legendary Koraidon, a big red lizard with a tire inexplicably strapped to its chest. Pokemon Violet gets the legendary Miraidon, a blue reptile made up of cosmic energy and powered by two jet turbines. Both Pokemon play into the whole past-future concept as well, but details on these creatures are scarce for now.

Interestingly, the trailer also shows off a bunch of Pokemon trainers meeting up in the open world and exploring together, confirming that the games feature up to four-player co-op multiplayer. You’ll be able to trade, battle and explore the region with three other players online, according to the Pokemon Company. Other trainers you meet also look very different from the player character, hinting that full character customisation might be available in multiplayer only.

And lastly: the little guys. The new trailer introduces three new ninth-generation Pokemon, and they’ve already taken the internet by storm. These are the olive Pokemon Smoliv:

The electric mouse Pokemon Pawmi:

And potentially the best Pokemon of all time, the hog Pokemon Lechonk. No really, its name is Lechonk:

People really like Lechonk:

They really, really like Lechonk:

Okay, last one:

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will launch on the Nintendo Switch on November 18, 2022. If Lechonk is version-exclusive, we will riot.
