South America will only have one slot in this year's TI after enjoying two regional qualifier slots in 2023 and 2024.
South American Dota 2 stalwarts HEROIC will be their region's lone representative in The International (TI) 2025 after they won the tournament's South American regional qualifier with a 3-1 victory over
Edge in the grand finals on Monday (9 June).
HEROIC have been the leading team in South America since the latter half of 2024, thanks in large part to its experienced roster featuring Yuma “Yuma” Langlet,
João “4nalog” Giannini,
Adrian “Wisper” Cespedes Dobles,
Elvis “Scofield” De la Cruz Peña, and
Matheus Santos Jungles “KJ” Diniz. As such, the team were considered the biggest favourites to win TI 2025's South American regional qualifier.
With that said, Peruvian squad Edge have risen to challenge HEROIC's dominance over the South American scene in recent months, and were pegged as the latter's biggest rival for a spot in TI 2025.
Both squads started the qualifier strong and won their first two matches in the upper bracket, with HEROIC taking down Infamous Gaming and
Team Sin Compromiso, while Edge defeated
Allstars and
OG.LATAM.
That then set up HEROIC and Edge's first meeting of the qualifiers in the upper bracket finals, where Edge emerged victorious in three games to become the first team in the grand finals. HEROIC then bounced back by defeating OG.LATAM in the lower bracket finals to earn a rematch with Edge for a spot in TI 2025.
Edge drew first blood in the grand finals with a 46-minute late game comeback, but HEROIC responded by winning back-to-back hour-long thrillers to take a commanding 2-1 lead in the series. Game four saw Edge get in position to force the grand finals to a deciding game five, but HEROIC managed to pull off a 44-minute comeback to secure the 3-1 grand finals victory and a spot in TI 2025.
HEROIC now joins Eastern European regional qualifier winner Aurora Gaming as the first two teams to earn a spot in TI 2025 through the regional qualifiers. South America will notably only have one slot in this year's TI after the region enjoyed two regional qualifier slots in 2023 and 2024.
This year's TI regional qualifiers will take place across two weeks of competition from 4 to 17 June, with three batches of two qualifiers each being played at a time.
The next two regional qualifiers will be for China and North America, taking place from 9 to 12 June, with one team from each qualifier earning a spot in TI 2025. The final two regional qualifiers will be for Southeast Asia and Western Europe, which will be hosted from 13 to 17 June, with two teams from each qualifier advancing to this year's Dota 2 world championship tournament.
The winners of the TI 2025 regional qualifiers will join eight directly-invited teams in this year's Dota 2 world championship tournament. The direct invite teams include defending TI champions Team Liquid,
Tundra Esports,
Team Falcons, and
Gaimin Gladiators from Western Europe;
PARIVISION,
BetBoom Team, and
Team Spirit from Eastern Europe; as well as
All Gamers Global (formerly
Team Tidebound) from China.
