Arrow Gaming dominant on first day of SEA qualifiers

Arrow Gaming is very impressive on the first day of the SEA qualifiers as they won all six of their matches, and following them is a big pile of teams with close scores. The group stage will resume tomorrow at 06:00 CEST (12:00 SGT)

Three six-game teams today finished within the top three slots of The International 4 Southeast Asian qualifiers' day one. Malaysian-team Arrow Gaming leads the way after impressively winning all of their six matches. Mineski follows, sporting a tied second place with a 4-2 record after stringing four straight wins in between of their first and last game today. The other team with a similar 4-2 record is Orange, showing the fruits of their experience from China last weekend.

As expected, the SEA qualifier is a mix up as the teams have the capacity to beat each other. The middle of the pack is all clustered, as five teams find themselves with a differential of not more than one win. What makes it more interesting is that the teams are are all vying for just four playoff slots. Many teams in this mix will be facing each other on day two.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment on day one is Scythe. Touted as one of the favorites, they have struggled and lost three straight after winning their opening game. A similar, albeit worse, scenario happened to Zephyr, who lost five straight after winning their initial match. Filipino-team Execration also performed poorly, claiming only one win in their five games.

How the teams finish in the group stage will play a big part in the playoffs. While the top four teams will advance, the top two will have an incentive as they will be seeded directly into the upper bracket finals. Arrow Gaming can secure that top finish tomorrow by winning just two of their three matches, and winning just one is still likely enough to have them ending with a top two record. The same can not be said for the others, as at least seven other teams are scrambling for just three other playoff slots. Only one win separates the current fourth placer from the current eight placer.

There are less group games to be played tomorrow, a total of 17 in contrast to the 28 of today. However, it is highly possible that we will see a number of tiebreaker matches after. The first four games tomorrow will begin at 06:00 CEST (12:00 SGT).

The winner of the SEA qualifier will get an outright slot into the very prestigious The International 4, while the runner-up will get to compete against other regional runner-ups in the wildcard tournament. Both of those tournaments will be held in Seattle this coming July.
