The amateur scene is expanding with D2RO launching their recent $1,000 cup. Eight teams such as the Romanian old school line-up in Cede Nullis and Belarusian powerhouse PowerRangers will compete with the teams coming from the open qualifiers.
The D2RO Spring Cup is set to launch as Spring is appearantly coming to Romania. Along with Spring comes $1,000 which will be split between the top two teams ($700 for the winner and $300 for the runner up). Sixteen teams will compete in four double elimination groups where the top two teams of each group move on to the single elimination playoff bracket. For those unfamiliar with double elimination groups, it is essentially a regular double elimination bracket without the grand final. A team gets eliminated after losing two matches, it is a way to make every game count.
The main event as described above starts March 24th. Prior to that there is a qualifier phase, in which everyone can register to compete for the eight spots granted through this stage, starting March 10th. Eight teams are already invited to the main event. Sign-ups can be found here and are open until March 7th. These sort of national or local based tournaments are healthy and stimulate a growth in the amateur scene which further helps reducing the distance between the regular pub player and the professional super star. Despite being hosted by Dota 2 Romania, the tournament is open for anyone with a Steam account and a mouse.
