The first group stage of StarSeries XII featured four groups with the same number of teams in each. They have played a round robin where the teams faced each others in best-of-three series. The top two teams of each group are moving on to the next group stage, where the third placed teams will have one more chance in the 'Last chance qualifier'.
Group A didn't bring any upsets as the top two favorites, Ninjas in Pyjamas and Team SoloMid (previously known as Team Dignitas), advanced to the next round. While group B saw one of the top eight finishers of DH Winter, Penta Sports, resulting at the bottom of the group, while Virtus.pro and HellRaisers reserved the top two slots. Group C brought an unexpected result of FlipSid3 Tactics (previously known as DaT Team) topping the group with three wins and zero losses. They were followed by Titan who managed to knock down Na'Vi for second place in the group.
Group D was the last to play, where the top two ranked teams in the world were placed. After the first day, Team EnVyUs (ex-Team LDLC) grabbed two wins and secured their ticket to the next stage, while it was Fnatic's turn to try to do the same today. The Swedish team couldn't play with krimz and olofm (for reasons that weren't made public) and so they were forced to use stand-in players carn and Lidde which resulted in them losing both of their matches today to CPH Wolves and Gplay. As the groups outcome was already known, Team EnvyUs was already placed first and the Danes were second, Fnatic decided to forfeit their last match against EnVyUs as it wouldn't affect group standings. This resulted in Fnatic's elimination as they are now placed fourth in the group and only the third placed team will have a second chance in the 'Last Chance qualifier'.
The second group stage will feature two groups with four of the qualifying teams in each, where the top eight teams from group stage one will be placed. They will once again play round-robin with the best-of-three format, awarding the top two teams of each bracket to move on to the LAN finals. The third and fourth placed teams will be placed in a new single elimination bracket where they will fight for one slot at the LAN Finals.
Finally, the 'Last Chance' qualifier will feature the third-placed teams of both group stage one and group stage two, who will fight for the last spot at the LAN finals.
