The Polls of November: Recap and Analysis

Top 5 News article polls

"Do you think this team will do well? [Rly Cool Guys]"

Yes 49%   51% No

At the recent Merry Melee, we had the pleasure of seeing former Cloud9 members Grego and Reaver play in a major Overwatch tournament once again. Accompanied by Wunderfuls, Frisco, Shadder2k, and Robwiz, the team performed well against Kingdom eSports with a 2-1 victory. When facing off against their former team members in the new Cloud9 roster, Rly Cool Guys found themselves defeated 0-2. Interestingly enough, Kingdom eSports bested Cloud9 2-1. It's very clear that Rly Cool Guys is a strong contender for being a fairly new roster. While the polls are very divided on whether the team will do well or not, it's clear to see that they certainly put up a fight in the Merry Melee. With over 1000 poll participants, it'd be interesting to ask this question again after the Merry Melee results.

"Can you understand all these interactions? [Sombra's EMP]"

|A| 40%   60% |B|

A: Yes, makes sense | B: No, seems kind of random

The big Overwatch news of November was, undoubtedly, the extravagant appearance of the new hero: Sombra. Teased for what felt like forever, the hacker brought ground-breaking new abilities into the game. Her Hack (and Ultimate) are the first implementations of a silence in Overwatch, and logically were surrounded by controversy and questions. GosuGamers listed what her ultimate affects and what it doesn't, and it seems as though our readers are divided on the EMP. With only a slight majority of 60% saying they believe the interactions to be random, it's unlikely her ultimate's effects will be altered in the near future. However, her pick-rate, win-rate, and tournament results may lead to her receiving some attention from Blizzard. It's unfortunate, however, that a sizeable portion of players seem to find a lack of consistency with her ultimate's effects.

"Are you excited for the Overwatch Pro League?"

Yes 89%   11% No

It's absolutely awesome that the majority of readers are excited for the Overwatch Pro League. Blizzard's league announcement, to put it lightly, surprised a great number of professional and casual players alike. With a unique vision for their beloved game, it's great to see its fans supporting Blizzard. With Overwatch being an absolute hit, it's very plausible for Blizzard to take it in a unique direction that keeps the game relevant for a long period of time.

"Do you think Quick Play should have introduced a hero limit?"

Yes 78%   22% No

Before one hero limit found its way into tournaments, players dealt with sometimes frustrating hero stacking. After putting up a fight by arguing that hero stacking was crucial to the game, Blizzard caved and introduced one hero limit into competitive/ranked mode. Unfortunately, this soon led to Quick Play receiving a very negative reputation. Quick Play eventually found itself with a one hero limit as well, and this poll shows it was received positively just like Ranked Play's change. To cater to the players that wanted to have care-free fun, Blizzard introduced a new Arcade mode. Undoubtedly, the developers of Overwatch continue to have moments of brilliance.

"Are you excited!? [Blizzcon Overwatch Announcements]"

Yes 93%   7% No

With a 93% majority voice, the fans of Overwatch were clearly excited for the new changes coming to Overwatch. Sombra, a new Arcade more, Quick Play hero limits, and the new Overwatch League electrified the Overwatch community. The first introduction of unique game modes was clearly well received. This is extremely important as it shows that the community is very supportive of Blizzard's game design, and that Blizzard is great at listening to its fans and giving us what we want.

Top 5 Feature article polls

"Do you think Sombra will be a strong character?"

Yes 84%   16% No

With Sombra being the talk of November, it's no surprise this poll was extremely popular. With a vast majority of people under the impression Sombra would be a strong character, it contrasts starkly with her usage rate. It really begs the question as to what's lacking in her seemingly game-changing kit. The fans believing that a new hero will be strong is great for Blizzard, however, because new heros need to produce awe and shock when announced.

"Do you want to see more owner interviews in the future?"

Yes 94%   6% No

Senior editor Scr1be was back at it again with another interview. This one captured the thoughts of Tempo Storm's Reynad. Reynad offered insight from a business and management perspective from the professional world of Overwatch. The positive reaction to this content is great for indicating that there's an interest in this information. Interest in the professional side of Overwatch helps grow the game as an eSport, and the overwhelming 94% majority certainly confirms that interest.

"Would the World Cup roster be the best team in Korea?"

Yes 78%   21% No

The Overwatch World Cup was, undoubtedly, a one-of-a-kind experience. With teams formed from community icons and professionals alike, Blizzard brought quality production and excellent talent together despite some initial doubt. South Korea fell under particular scrutiny with their World Cup team performing phenomenally. A majority of fans believe that the World Cup roster would be the strongest team in Korea if they played together. This is undoubtedly based on the performance in the World Cup. However, the World Cup did not have the same level of competition as OGN's recent tournament or the popular Alienware Monthly Melee events. While South Korea performed admirably, no one can say how that roster would do against an established team such as Misfits or Fnatic.

"Should new characters be used in competitive soon as they're released?"

Yes 15%   No 85%

In one of GosuGamers' recent articles, we asked the readers how they felt about new heroes being available for use in Ranked Play. As players began to harass others for choosing Sombra in Ranked mode due to generally poor play, it began to pose a question. Should new heroes be given a learning period in which they aren't available for Ranked Play? A majority of the community believes this would be the right way to proceed. With Blizzard being generally responsive to the outcries of the masses, we may see this implemented with future hero releases.

"Did you enjoy the work [of] the Observer team...with the OW World Cup?"

Yes 95%   5% No

The World Cup brought on-screen statistics, great camera angles, and excellent casting. The unsung heroes of the event were certainly the Observer team members. Another special interview from our senior editor Scr1be brought insight on how the games of the World Cup were made enjoyable to view for the fans. Overwatch has a reputation for being a very difficult game to watch due to its fast paced nature, 3 dimensional movement, and 12 players per game. The World Cup observer crew definitely raised the bar for Overwatch Production across the world.

If you enjoyed this recap on the month's popular and interesting poll questions, be sure to let us know! We see that there were two popular polls that split the community. The other 8 had the majority expressing the same view. November was an extremely explosive month for Overwatch with myriad tournaments, huge announcements from Blizzard, changes to the game, and major roster shakeups. Heading into December, we hope to see Overwatch continue to progress at its current, astonishing rate.
