GAME ONE
A very weird game right off the bat opened the second quarter final series between KT Rolster and MVP Ozone and with time it became a tractate on the importance of kills versus the importance of objectives. MVP chose the first option and they did it exceptionally - whenever they fought, heads fell off, caught in the AoE death of Absolute Zero and Chain of Corruption. Running a teleport/homeguard Ryze, Dade was an even deadlier terror and countless engagements were initiated by him appearing from nowhere and Rune Prisoning someone to death. Yet none of this affected KT Rolster's mindset even the slightest. With scary diligence, KT took tower after tower, dragon after dragon and were baron's worst nightmare to keep the gold lead despite being ten kills behind. Their map control was perfect and KT knew very well that if they do not lose objectives after dropping a kill, they'll only need one good team fight after which their tower advantage will automatically win them the game. This team fight came half an hour into the match when KT Rolster caught MVP on the top lane where they caught Nunu out of position, repeated that with the Ryze that had just teleported in the middle of it all, killed a few more people in the next minute, destroy the top inhibitor and snowball it from there.
GAME TWO
Down a game, MVP Ozone fell back to a strategy well known to one CLG, namely "protect the Vayne, feed the Vayne". In the midst of the early jabs that the teams threw at each other, MVP did everything in their power to make Imp as scary as possible and as they did, the mid game turned into a complete nightmare for KT Rolster. Standing behind a killer sea of AoE CC consisting of Jarvan's, Sona's and Kennen's ultimate (as well as Jayce's knockback), Imp had a field day at MVP. At 25th minute, his Vayne had banked a 5/0/3 KDA and 224 CS, happily equipped with a BotRK, Phantom Dancer and a Zeal, which she won't even get to upgrade because of the length of the game. Although running a Zac/Renekton front line that could theoretically dive in and disrupt Vayne, KT Rolster simply could not as MVP were on point with halting any threats that were to come after their AD carry. The screenshot below, which is also the last team fight for the game, encaptures one such situation: Zac would dive only to be chain CC-ed and while Renekton will make it as far as Vayne's position, he'd simply find himself in a DPS deficit and get slaughtered 1v1.
GAME THREE
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it goes" the saying and MVP Ozone took it to heart, once again picking a Kennen/Jarvan combo to protect Imp's Vayne and mixing in a Zyra where Sona used to be. When game two was more or less a one-sided ramming, however, game three picked up a more equal pace. The Dragon was the magnit that attracted the team fights but after a couple of those none of the teams seemed to be in the clear advantage as kill, tower and gold scores were mostly even. Then, Imp started killing people push came to shove for KT Rolster. Getting aced at the 20th minute wasn't the most optimal of approaches but then this got followed by a four for zero exhange at the 26th minute after KT unsuccessfully tried to engage on MVP after they got baron. While all low on HP, MVP handled it perfectly, dancing in and out of the danger zone to deal a crushing loss to KT, despite the bad position they were initially in. Morea team fights would follow and although KT were able to get a kill here and there, it didn't matter one bit - Imp remained very much untouched and with a 13/2/4 KDA to his account, he marched in at the 36th minute for the kill.
GAME FOUR
KT Rolster finally realized to they have to ban Vayne away from Imp but MVP's way of playing out the strategy remained pretty much unchanged and subbing Varus for Vayne even added some addiitonal AoE component to their already AoE-heavy composition. As the battle heated up (and it heated up quickly), KT played superbly and headlined by InSec's otherworldy engagements they gave MVP a rough mid game to fight through but ten minutes later they ended up in a situation way too familiar. Varus was unreachable. Homme and DanDy were on their third Kennen/Jarvan initiate combo in a row and flaws were none to be found. Mata was again on an AoE CC champion. And in the very rare occasions in which Varus did die, there was Dade's Jayce (also played to perfection) to clean house. Varus dead? No worries, Jayce can take over With this victory, MVP Ozone go on to mean Group A champion SK Telecom T1 #2, whom they beat 2-0 in the group stages. Next week, Blaze plays SKT T1 and CJ Forst goes against NaJin Sword in the other two quarter final matches.
