GEST All-Star : 1v1 Match-ups Preview

cbfe0c0826a5dea2b495bc4e721268f9d155ceaa0f0f4cab20c4696343.jpg

We will be taking a break from the Gigabyte E-Sports Tournament's (GEST) usual format, but rest assured that we are in it for just as much fun and excitement. Sit back as our Caster David "GoDz" Parker and DotA editor Ren "Pacific.Ren" Vitug go through the pairings and matches of the event.

After reviewing my past 2 predictions, I came to realize that I wasn't really that bad - I was just a mere bet off from having a similar score with the winner! And with that new found confidence, I will once again try to figure out what would happen on this weekend's event.

Looking on the roster of the 2 teams, I cannot help but notice the absence of many great players. This just goes to show the high level of competitive SEA DotA. On another note, it is extremely hard to predict a 1v1 match. The item build is pretty much the most vital thing, but hero familiarity can easily become a big factor.

To avoid being the sole scapegoat of wrong Gosubets, our resident caster and Team Gigabyte Captain David "GoDz" Parker will bring in his unquestionably non-biased opinion as well.

85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: We have a a great utility player, against a great solo player. While we have a solid player on Team Gigabyte, I find it hard to see Team PlayCyberGames' ace player losing on this one. I am calling a 2-0 for Jay on this match-up

Philippines PacificBybEMAXX Philippines iZONEGIGABYTEam/Joven
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: WR, DK

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: This is a great match-up of 2 known Solo lane players. It is honestly tough to call, but I am inclining towards the more experience Joven on this one. I feel that this will reach a third game, and that experience advantage will help Joven clinch that -ar game.

Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: QoP, ES

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: Wootz is known for micro-extensive heroes and well-placed Fissures, both of which aren't of much help on this kind of game. Of course, whatever he will be playing will be played by his opponent as well, but I favor Hug's advantage being on his natural lane. I'll give Team Gigabyte a point here.

Philippines Mski_Rr_Pcolor Philippines iZONEGIGABYTEkC/Kel
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: SD, CM

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: This would be a fantastic match-up of 2 top tiers hard Support players. Both known for great positional plays, their laning skills will be tested this time around. RR plays carry situationally, and I feel that that is his edge on this match-up. Another one for Team Gigabyte.

Myanmar Gse7en-VrKat Philippines PacificChnEMAXX
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: Naga, Leshrach

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: I'll be consistent in favoring the carry over the utility support - this time, it is Chin over VrKat. These G7 guys are well-known for causing upsets though, so watch out.

85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: . Kyxy is an awesome player, but somehow my gut tells me that Intreso would win this match-up. And no, I am not just hating on David's team

Thailand GIGABYTE]iD-nn Thailand MiTH-TrLaKelz
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: AM, ES

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: I think this is a mismatch based on roles, and should be swapped with another pair which I will tell you as we go through it later. Lakelz should get this, easily.

Philippines DrmzLed-Owey-SS Thailand MiTH-TrlaabBAA
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: DK, BM

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: Both players play a similar hero pool, so this match should be close and well-contested. This would likely reach a clinching game, and I would pick Owey to win this one. This is close though, and I wouldn't be surprised if it goes the other way.

Philippines iZONEGIGABYTEsk/Atong Thailand GIGABYTE]iD-min
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: Invoker, Sand King

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: iDeal is hot lately, and one of the reasons is the stellar play of solo player min. Another match-up of players with different natural roles, I will once again favor the solo player.

Cambodia SVR[eS]BeeMyanmar Gse7en-kalay
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: DK, Rhasta

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: Bee is a flexible player, but is naturally a carry. Kalay, on the other hand, is a support. As I had before, I will once again favor the carry player.

Philippines MSievoGTkimoTnC Philippines DrmzLed-Yosh-SS
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: CM, ES

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: The match-up of Team Captains, and another natural support players' battle. Expect a bit of All-Chats exchanged on this game, and this should be another close one. I am favoring Kimo a bit, so I will go with him on this game.

Philippines DrmzLed-JuLz Philippines PacificLWYPALIT
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: SF, Sand King

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: This is the other match-up on which I think is misplaced, natural position-wise. Julz plays a great solo, and he should win this match-up 2-0.

Malaysia Orange_Mushi-My Philippines LedionRaraUST
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: Puck, Panda

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: Rara is a very solid flexible player, but I feel Mushi's top-tier experience on mid lane should give the win. Mushi has been travelling a lot lately though, and I heard he was playing some HoN too. Still, tough ordeal for Rara to win on this match-up.

Philippines PacificRCGPALIT/Santino Malaysia Orange_YMT-My
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: SF, Invoker

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: The newcomer versus the Legend. I have personally seen how Santino has developed into an awesome solo player, but I do feel that he is still a few years to early to take a win against YamateH.

Australia GGnet-GoDz Thailand CyberClasher
Hero/es we might (or would love to) see: Pudge, Techies

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: GoDz is of course an ex-professional player, but he is now playing on enemy grounds. He is against a PCG caster, on the PCG client. David should be scared now, win for CyberClasher.

Summary of Picks

29773e5cd432aaa679107021d032c74b461db1f722c49e32d0a0825875.jpgDavid: 15-0, We got this.
85f86d31fbebcf8f6cefdc83a972597f95edb931123e08303bf91997a7.jpgRen: Carry over the non-Carry, Go with gut feeling, and not-hating on David and his team. The total is 7-8, in favor of Team PlayCyberGames.

I have highly favored the Carries, but may things work against them? Would they be unfamiliar with other heroes' projectiles? Will they be uneasy when there is no rune and there is nothing to gank? There are just some of the intangible considerations that we may want to think of.

David will be changing some stuffs later, but his opinion would stay as it is for the moment. Stay tuned for a preview on the 5v5 Matches, and of course for the Full Coverage of the GEST All-Star Event.

note: game format was changed to Bo1
