Up-and-downs Group B

Wednesday brought us one of the toughest up-and-down groups in the history of GSL. It started with a MLG revenge match between MC and Losira and ended with to-the-death games for the top two spots.

Shaky beginnings

MC vs Losira, unfortunately, could not reach the magnitude of their MLG as MC found it incredibly tough to do any damage to Losira's perfect defense. The zerg saved his third from MC's stargate opening and later completely denied MC's chargelot/colossus timing push by just having a ton more stuff.

Kyrix and Check played a quick ZvZ before Losira and MC were to return for their second matches. Kyrix tried to win in the early game off of fast baneling nest but all he killed was a single queen. Check then took his natural and turtled up behind his roaches until +1 attack finished to reinforce his killing blow.

Losira failed to get an early 2-0 in his group by falling to Jjakji after his endless carpets of banelings could not really beat down the constant marine flow. To mitigate his victory, Jjakji then proceeded to lose to Check in a thrilling back-and-forth game. Check's first mistake came when he created too big of a tech window and Jjakji almost killed him there and then with a timing push. However, Check's constant counter attack kept Jjakji at bay and chewed him apart slowly. Check was now on top of the group.

MC was the third player to end up with 1-1 after the first set of games. His opponent Kyrix fell in under 10 minutes as MC put to use one of his famous void ray openings, reinforced with zealot warp ins.

Downfalls

Check continued his spree by signing yet another victory, this time against MC. The Prime zerg abused the fact that MC had walled off too far ahead, at his second choke leading to his third. Thus, Check went for fast Lair into Nydus, the latter popping out in a middle of an empty ground with no way of MC defending the constant inflow of lings that chewed him to death.

Check's first loss was at the hands of Losira where the two zergs played a mirror that reminded of the old StarCraft days. The baneling vs baneling action soon caught flight and transitioned into muta wars. Check was the first to launch an attack but Losira held it thanks to faster reinforcements and then used his superior macro mechanics and control to dominate Check's fliers later in the game. Losira's earlier victory against Kyrix (won by surgical muta timing attack just before hydras would pop out) put him on equal ground with Check with a 3-1 score.

Jjakji was the third player to hit a 3-1 overall score. First, he took advantage of a deadly mistake by Kyrix, who overchased his marines and lost too much valuable drones to hold the double rax rush. Then, he won an important victory against MC himself in a match where most would point the protoss the favorite. Jjakji launched a deadly timing attack and used a stupid amount of ghosts to render MC's storm-centric army moot.

In regard to aforementioned scores, Group B ended with a 3-player tiebreaker after Check, Losira and Jjakji were all tied 3-1. And as those dispute was about to go under way, Code S said goodbye to the two-times champion MC, who would have to fight his way back through Code A next season.

The tiebreaker

The first set of games brought the group to yet another stalemate. After losing a game to Check's baneling rush, Losira knew he had to play his best against Jjakji or he would be out of Code S. So, taking a page out of Check vs Jjakji from earlier, Losira used heavy hive pressure plus constant run-byes and counter attacks to sway terran's army back and forth constantly. Ultimately, Jjakji would surrender the series but would get his payback on the swarm against Check. The terran took this opportunity to avenge himself and tirelessly hunted down Check's bases to leave him broke and with fingers on the GG.

This lead to the fourteenth match for the day and the third between Losira and Check. While Check was aggressively teching to Lair, Losira used the smaller army count of his opponent to do ever-growing baneling damage to Check's economy. Even though he had his spire first, Check was unable to stay equal in the gas war and Losira outmacroed him flat on.

Check and Jjakji closed the epic marathon called Group B. Jjakji chose marine/tank as his composition of choice and was constantly into Check's face. Although the zerg managed to repel the first push, he carelessly lost a major part of his banelings during the counter attack and a follow-up push by Jjakji put an end to Check's ambitions of climbing to Code S.
