GSL Super Ro16 Day 2 recap

The coming of the second day of the Ro16 featured Alicia, the sole protoss still alive in the tournament, in the company of legends, champions and new hopes.

South Korea Leenock vs South Korea Alicia

Game 1 @ Crossfire. Alicia opened with a void ray expand but soon found himself pressured by Leenock's hydras and only via some incredible forcefields did he manage to keep his army alive. The mid-game was colored by the attempts by both players to seize a better positioning and finally that advantage came to Alicia as he caught the roach/hydra/corruptor army from a good angle and although killing all the Colossi, the Zerg was left with nothing and soon lost two of his bases. Leenock tried to get back in the game with a brood lord/infestor army but it was far too late considering the bad state his economy was.

Game 2 @ Xel'Naga Caverns. We saw some really cool play by Leenock as he went for a mid-game creep highway push with hydras. In a matter of minutes, Alicia's natural was under heavy fire but once again some nice forcefields kept him in the game and after few more attacks, Leenock stopped the offence and went back to droning and building a roach/infestor army. The latter proved to be a smart choice as all Alicia had were some blink stalkers and after some devastating fungals the game was over.

Game 3 @ Belshir Beach. Another brilliant play came from Leenock as his 3 roach pressure managed to kill the forge, force two more unnecessary cannons and give the Zerg the option to easily take a third. But a grave mistake soon followed this cool opening as Leenock's active droning made him vulnerable to the air counter-harass by Alicia, who, with 6 fenixes and a void ray, managed to kill a lot of queens, drones and force in return a ton of spore crawlers.
After finally repelling the air force of Alicia, Leenock started slowly getting ahead in supply due to having base advantage. On top of that, he started launching multi-pronged burrow roach attacks and that eventually led to a base-trade scenario after Alicia got sick of moving his whole army back just to kill a few roaches. By that time, however, Leenock had a better army composition, his brood lord count high enough to deal with the enemy stalkers. And the Zerg would have won it all had he not split his army and sent the Brood Lords alone to their death. Without the air threat, Alicia calmly erased the whole zerg base.

South Korea Maka vs South Korea Polt

Game 1 @ Crossfire. In an attempt to gain an early lead, Maka went for a proxy rax pressure and that paid more than well with the dead of nearly 10 SCVs, a hellion and a depot. But when the tank from Polt appeared on the field Maka had to retreat and switch to a normal mid-game plan. To return the favor of being shot to (almost) death, Polt countered with a cloak banshee that kept Maka in his base for quite a while so Polt can muster a marine/tank force that was to push before Maka can set up a position in front of his natural.
Thus, Polt marched down but marched a bit too far and lost the majority of his marine to a siege tank fire. From that point on, Maka easily secured his expo and after a marine drop accompanied by a frontal attack at the 17-minute mark, the game was his.

Game 2 @ Xel'Naga Fortress. Both players opened with cloak banshees but the harasses had to stop once the missile turrets went up. From that point on, the main builds of the terrans started branching out with Maka going for a second factory and Polt adding another Starport and going for the offensive with his tank force soon sieged at Maka's natural. Although Maka had the tank advantage due to his double factory, he just could not get air superiority as the viking count by Polt was just too huge and not even some nicely placed PDDs could help Maka. Not being able to utilize his tanks, was soon trampled by the relentless push of Polt.

Game 3 @ Dual Sight. Once again Maka opened with Banshees but a sloppy control and a bad rally point were the death of his two fliers. Knowing that he has a window to deal enormous damage, Polt stimmed and ran his marines to Maka's natural. Although in possession of a tank and a full bunker, Maka's stim and siege tech were not even half-way done. Thus, Polt's marines charged unchallenged, denied the expo, sniped some SCVs and left with a thirty food lead. The game ended after Polt regrouped and launched a second push that was utterly unstoppable.

South Korea Nada vs South Korea Line

Game 1 @ Terminus. The terran legend and the up-and-coming zerg cooked up a nice macro game on Terminus, remaining passive for most part until Nada decided to move out with a giant marine/thor/tank army. His first target was Line fourth and after the zerg could not save it, he had to regroup at his natural because this was Nada's next stop. At first it seemed that all the important zerg tech would be sniped but the brood lords of Line actually saved the day by barely cleaning the marines and pushing back the mech that remained.
But Nada would not abandon his aggression that easily and five minutes later he grouped up for a second attack. This time Line was in way more trouble as his brood lords had no ground support (due to a rather unsuccessful ling run-by at the same time) and got slaughtered in second.

Game 2 @ Crevasse. If there were heroes of the day they would be Line's mutalisks. The zerg used his pesky fliers to kill two full dropships of Nada and hold the terran push until he could get some brood lords and infestors out. When Nada finally felt that he could move out, he was met by the maxed army of Line whose inferstors and tier 3 fliers ate the tanks and marines like they were a hot lasagna.

Game 3 @ Dual Sight. Line went for a similar strategy as on Crevasse, using mutalisks and ling run-byes to keep the main terran army away from his gold base. Line's careful and calculated harasses and attacks eventually helped him to accumulate a way larger muta count that Nada could handle and the zerg started sending the to kill turreted expansions and even larger chunks of marines.
Nada actually showed incredible endurance than other terrans might in this situation and he succeeded in downing the base count of the Zerg but as the high-tier brood lord/baneling/infestor army knocked at his front, Nada just couldn't effectively deal with it. The Genius Terran was thus out of GSL Super.

South Korea TOP vs South Korea NesTea

Game 1 @ Belshir Beach. You rarely see a NesTea hatchery die to a bunker rush but after failing to surround the marines of TOP, the GSL champion was forced to give up his expansions as there was no way to kill the bunkers without suffering tremendous losses.
After TOP fell back, NesTea retook his natural and threw down a quick third but TOP knew that all he has to do is keep the zerg at low economy and he traded an army to take down NesTea's fresh expansion. Not being able to get the army count that he need due to having only two mining bases, NesTea fell to a push that once again killed his third and left him poor and dead.

Game 2 @ Crossfire. TOP's aggression was just as impressive in the second set as his hellion/banshee harass killed a lot of drones and the follow up marine/tank push that was soon under way seemed even scarier. NesTea had to use his drones to defend it and stay in the game but after the smoke cleared, the Zerg maestro was down more than twice the amount of workers.
But then the unbelievable happened. Four burrowed banelings put NesTea back in the game after blowing up a huge marine force that was moving forward for the killing blow. From that point on NesTea continued to use burrowed banelings to force scans (and still blow up a lot of marines) while doing perfect mutalisk harass. TOP probably had no idea how he lost a game that he won twice.

Game 3 @ Xel'Naga Fortress. NesTea made another uncharacteristic mistake by letting three hellions in his main and lose about 10 drones. TOP had an analogical follow-up as in set 2 but this time NesTea was ready and the terran army got repelled despite the beautiful tank spread by TOP.
NesTea started amassing mutalisks in attempt to equalize the economies and regain map control but he was forced to call them home as TOP went for an elevation push at the south ridge of NesTea's main. The zerg champion managed to stall it for a while but when a Thor stepped on stage and threw a deadly volley at the mutalisks, NesTea realized that here is no chance of winning the series.
