GSL director addresses GSTL issues

The absence of "Incredible Miracle" from the GSTL May has raised a lot of ruckus in the eSports scene. To address the concerns, GSL director Mr. Chae has given a statement about the situation in question.

The fact that we were to hear from higher GomTV positions on the "IM case" was inevitable. In order to cater for fans' hunger for resolution, GSL Director Mr. Chae talks about the absence of the two-times finalist and GSTL February winner from the upcoming season of the team league.

After the bracket has been released, a lot of people have been having discussions on community sites about the absence of IM in GSTL May.

When GSTL was first organized there were total of 8 StarCraft 2 teams. Since the number of teams that could participate in GSTL at the time was 8, we proceeded with Ro8 tournament format.

As you already know, StaCraft 2 is currently being stabilized at a remarkable speed.

Teams are being built and organized at a pace faster than we have anticipated. We thought that the transfer of players from one team to another would be very flexible but the structure of each team has been established very quickly.

Some people are expressing their dislikes toward our system that selects GSTL participants by assessing the number of individual league participants from each team.
Please let me explain our original intention.

We have seen individual players suffering from the disharmony between the teams in the history of eSports. We also have experienced how one individual can be so powerless in front of an organization.
Thus we thought that even though it's a team league, if we use points from GSL participation (a tournament in which everyone can participate in freely) then we could prevent individual players from receiving unfair treatments from their teams. Of course we are not saying that certain teams are treating their players unwell. However, we believe that there should definitely be a system that can protect the players.

IM is a traditionally strong team and a great team that always advances to the final whether it be GSL or GSTL.
However, GSTL participation rule has been announced at the beginning of this year and due to the rule, teams like MVP or NSHoseo could not participate in the previous 2 GSTLs. IM team was given the "same" opportunity to participate in the upcoming GSTL.

Currently, the policy that was designed to protect the individual players is little by little leaning towards giving more teams the opportunity to participate in GSTL.

GSTL May will feature teams that have followed the rule that has been already announced.
However, the committee, the teams, and related people are continuously having discussions about the expansion of GSTL and we want to tell you that the talks are very positive.

We are thinking a lot about the players and the teams more than it appears to be.
I was the first generation progamer (even though not many would remember and even my memory is fazing...)
and I would very much like to maintain the ecosystem of eSports.
There are mistakes we have made but GOMTV and eSports fans are walking towards the same goal. And even though we share a same goal, the routes that lead up to it could be different. However, I promise that in the end we will all rejoice at the finish line.

Thank you.
Mr. Chae, GSL Director
