"I have faith in my team" Kato Jason about Scythe

When we asked for an interview with one of the Scythe players earlier today, we got informed, that all of them were training as of the moment. The person, who welcomed us in their place was Scythe chairman Kato 'xinxin' Jason. As we didnt want to disturb the important training session, we sat down with him instead, talking about the team and gaining various insights on the new Asian Powerhouse.

Welcome Kato. As most of us are only familiar with the renowned Scythe players, please introduce yourself to our readers and tell us what you do in Scythe.SG.
My name is Kato Jason. I am the CEO/Director of Scythe Gaming Inc, incorporated in Japan. I take charge of the overall running of the company, as well as the E-Gaming Division, which includes the mentioned players.

The DotA division of Scythe was added a few months ago. How did it happen and especially with these characters?
Basically, we started with the defunct AEON.sg. As time went by, I took charge and decided to let some of our players go, as they didnt chime together anymore. Shortly later, I took up Sharky, Koy and Yamateh which are renowned names in the DotA world. Sharky is known for his skill to play in dangerous lanes, while Koy is well feared for his support. I probably don't need to tell readers out there what Yamateh's role is (*laughs*). These players, combined with sufficient training will be stronger than alot of teams out there.

Why DotA?
Well, I initially decided to venture in to SC2, which iceiceice was good at. But upon dropping him from the team, I decided to dedicate my time to DotA.

Do you know what iceiceice is up to as of the moment? Will he be back sometime?
I have no idea. Right now, I only communicate with the players on my team.

We are more like friends, than what an employer/employee relationship would be

Scythe CEO Kato Jason about the relationship to his players
How deeply are you involved in the team? Do you help with strategies and game related decisions as well, or are you more of a manager and director
I am actually quite involved, as I speak to all members on a regular interval. We're more like friends than what an employer/employee relationship would be. I go through replays and give hy tips on their current opponents.

How did the Malaysians fit in, when you started out spending time together? With three established Singaporean players, was the mood collegial right away, or was there a need to firstly overcome possible "rivalries" from previous encounters.
Well no. All of them are pretty good friends, as they play together often. I guess putting them together as a team was the best option for everybody.

Are you located in the same city as some of your players?
No I am not. I'm located in Tokyo, Japan while hy and roy live in Singapore and Koy, Sharky and Yamateh in Malaysia.

How are the players doing as of the moment? We havent seen much from them, since their convincing victory against SB. Hows the mood in the team?
They are feeling good. And they're confident. With this current team, my expectations naturally go up. I am more than pleased with the current lineup however.

True that. Do you still take glances at some players who are clanless out there? Is there anybody who you would like to see in scythe?
Well, this current team is good. Unless anyone of them wants out, I will not remove anybody.

Back then still playing for Nirvana.my: Yamateh, Hyhy and Sharky from Scythe

Before we come to the next ADC match, pls tell us about your gaming experiences in DotA until this point. When did you discover the game and how did you end up as the CEO of Scythe?
Oh thats a long story. I'll need to type for probably 24hours before I would be finished (*laughs*). Making it short, I started to play the game a few years ago, when I was in Singapore and started Scythe Gaming as a form of business venture. The project was founded shortly before the addition of the DotA team.
Now we're manufacturing our own Gaming peripherals. I want to achieve what Razer is achieving right now. We have the funds and the right people.

The opponent of your team in the next ADC round is Nirvana.Cherry. How do you see your chances?
I have faith in my team. I have 90% of faith in them, that they will take this game. A major factor is latency though.

Their roster shows a few lesser known faces, compared to the main season before the huge transfer period. Despite having less "Top stars" against you, you have no knowledge about their playstyle either. If you were to choose, would you prefer to face the old, or the current Nv.
I will take 1 for breakfast, 1 for lunch and 1 for dinner. (*laughs*)

Do you feel you can win this whole thing?
The key to winning is to have confidence in yourself. If you lack that, You can never win anything. Therefore, I think so yes. We can win. You have to win yourself first before winning others; this is what I always believed in.
And it was successful thus far. When will you see your players the next time? Are there any LAN events you are planning to attend soon?
I'm in the midst of organising the Scythe Gaming's Cup. But I do not have alot of time to put in for this, as I've got other work to do. Thats why I have no idea when it's gonna happen, as planning this event takes a lot of time to make it successful. I have plans to roll it out together with my product launch.

When can we expect further news on that project? Any information you want to give away?
Those products are in the midst of testing right now. We want to make everything right before sending anything out to anybody's hand. Alot of manufacturers have the problemf of consumers, returning their product after a few months. That's why we want to make sure it lasts. We'll be using mechanical keyboards with cherry switches to make them stable. Mechanical keyboards and membrane keyboard's differences, is that mechanical keyboards have x2 lifespan of membrane's but the cost is higher. We're willing to absorb any differences to match it, as the same price as a membrane's keyboard to benefit gamers.

Oh thanks that was more than concrete, we are about to get off, so is there any statement towards your opponent on Saturday?
Good luck and have fun, which are the most important things of all.

Then thanks a lot for the interview. Any last words?
Well, I love each and every single one of my players out there. As well as my friends. Especially those I've met in Garena. Thank you!

Scythe.SG will play Nirvana.Cherry.cn at the 20th of February, 16:00 CET in the ADC Playoffs
