Worlds 2022: DRX steamrolls Saigon Buffalo after uneven match to pick up a win

DRX dominates a match against Saigon Buffalo on Day 2.

After ending Day 1 with nothing but wins on both sides, DRX and Saigon Buffalo came to an exciting clash in Day 2’s sixth match. The match ended with DRX coming out on top, delivering a concise victory against Saigon Buffalo, who seemed hopelessly outclassed here from the get-go.

Saigon Buffalo came into this match having just picked up a clinical win from Isurus earlier today, so the pressure was on to see if this team could string together a series of unbroken victories - or if DRX had what it took to stop them in their tracks. As it turns out, neither team was willing to take any immediate risks in this match. We saw a really slow early game where both teams scrounged for gold and waited to see if the other team would overextend, but it didn’t quite happen until DRX’s Kingen scored First Blood against SGB’s Hasmed eight minutes in.

DRX’s Zeka ended up in a sticky situation with three SGB enemies surrounding him, but managed to teleport away from death at the very last minute to secure his survival. DRX’s Juhan meanwhile, chipped away at the dragon while SGB remained clueless of his efforts. Two SGB players rounded up on Zeka once again and finally managed to put him down, but at the cost of one of their own - still allowing DRX a 2-1 lead in kills. SGB was making a lot of small mistakes in this early game, which DRX capitalised on to pick up a few kills and a slight gold lead.

SGB just couldn’t pull together to fend off any of DRX’s big plays, allowing the enemy team to pick up a Baron with control of the river, and a midlane turret at the same time despite hovering around the general area. The team suffered some losses after a teamfight but stubbornly pushed into a second fight over a dragon anyway. They scored the dragon, but got entirely wiped out by DRX in the process. SGB was playing aggressively at a very strange point of the match here, without enough damage or the right team composition to counter DRX in the fights that mattered.

SGB continued to be outmatched in the lategame, trailing behind DRX at a five-kill and nearly 10k gold deficit. It’s also worth noting that by the 24-minute mark, the team hadn’t managed to down a single turret as DRX forced them on constant defense. DRX took that advantage and used it to roll into the enemy base, which all but crumbled in an easy win. DRX has proven itself to be a fearsome team in Play-in Group B, and it’ll be interesting to see how the team fares against MAD Lions as both teams currently have unbroken 2-0 victories in Worlds 2022.

But first, we’ll see the Lions take on RNG in the penultimate match of the day.
